**Pac-Man** Reimagined: ‘Shadow Labyrinth’ Blends Nostalgia with Metroidvania Action!
Get ready for a mind-bending twist on a classic! Bandai Namco is celebrating Pac-Man's 45th anniversary with a game that's anything but traditional: Shadow Labyrinth. This isn't your average pellet-munching adventure; it's a dark, sci-fi Metroidvania that somehow manages to blend nostalgia with a fresh, grim aesthetic. Will this bold take on Pac-Man win over fans, or leave them lost in the labyrinth?
Initially teased as a bloodier, edgier take on the iconic character (remember Prime Video's "Secret Level" anthology?),Shadow Labyrinth seemed like a radical departure. But the latest trailer reveals a fascinating duality: alongside the grim sci-fi world where you play as Swordsman No. 8, battling to survive on an alien planet, lies a secret...
That secret? Actual, honest-to-goodness Pac-Man gameplay!
Imagine classic maze sections, reminiscent of the beloved Pac-Man Championship Edition series, but with a twist. Think boost pads, jumping, giant ghost boss battles, and entirely new maze types. It's Pac-Man, but evolved for a new generation.
The core gameplay puts you in the shoes (or rather, the armor) of "The Swordsman," accompanied by Puck, a familiar yet mysterious guide. Your mission: survive in a deadly world, utilizing Puck's abilities to gobble up enemies and gain vital upgrades.
According to Bandai Namco, in addition to the maze sections and references to past Pac-Man titles, Shadow Labyrinth will also feature nods to other classic Namco games, giving fans even more to look out for. The game blends Metroid-inspired elements with Pac-Man nostalgia into a thrilling experience. The new trailer showcases a series of mazes that look a lot more like the traditional Pac-Man experience you're perhaps more used to. There are a few interesting elements, including boost pads that speed Pac-Man (or "Puck", as it's known here) along a straight line, along with the ability to jump and bash into platforms, thus causing them to move or fall down.
Shadow Labyrinth is shaping up to be a unique experience. It's scheduled to launch on July 18th, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S. The game was originally released as Puck Man before the name was changed for obvious reasons. The first focus test for the game started in Shibuya on May 22, 1980, marking 45 years since it was first playable by the public.
Will this genre-bending take on Pac-Man capture your heart? Will the blend of Metroidvania action and classic maze gameplay create a truly unforgettable experience? Only time will tell.
