Whoop MG Faces Unresponsive Bug: Company Issues Replacements Amidst Launch Troubles

Whoop, the fitness tracker company known for its subscription-based model, is facing challenges with its recently launched Whoop MG wearable. Reports indicate that some devices are experiencing a significant bug rendering them unusable shortly after setup, leading the company to issue replacements.

The Whoop MG, launched alongside the Whoop 5.0 in early May, is a screen-less, fitness-focused wearable that boasts medical-grade features like ECG readings and blood pressure insights. However, users have taken to online forums and social media platforms like Reddit and X to report that their devices become unresponsive just hours after initial setup.

"I wore it for about 20 hours or so, but then it suddenly disappeared from the app, no sensor lights on, nothing appearing in the app," one frustrated Whoop MG owner shared on Reddit. Similar complaints have flooded Whoop's community forums, with users reporting an inability to connect to smartphones, even when the device is supposedly charged.

While Whoop suggests troubleshooting steps such as charging, reconnecting, or resetting the device, many users claim these methods have proven ineffective. Multiple reports indicate that Whoop's support team is proactively sending out replacement wearables to affected customers.

Whoop’s subscription model differs from many competitors; instead of purchasing a tracker outright, users pay a subscription fee that includes access to the hardware. The Whoop MG requires a $359 annual fee, leading some to question the value proposition, especially given the reported issues.

According to Tom's Guide, the Whoop 5.0 and Whoop MG offer a range of health features, including the new Healthspan feature, providing insights into aging. They are smaller and lighter than their predecessors. However, the review points out that the top-tier membership is expensive and that the cheapest membership lacks the new features. The review recommends for most people to opt for the Whoop 5.0 with the mid-tier ‘Peak’ membership.

The Whoop MG also has ECG functionalities built into the clasp. Whoop promises about two weeks of wear between charges, and reviews suggest this is an accurate estimate.

This isn't the first challenge Whoop has faced recently. Earlier this month, the company faced backlash after initially denying free hardware upgrades to existing customers, a decision they later reversed following community outrage. Users now report that Whoop support is proactively sending replacement units even if they have not reported issues.

It remains unclear how widespread the Whoop MG bug is. We've contacted Whoop for clarification and will update this article as soon as we receive a response.

Whoop's proactive response in issuing replacements suggests they are taking the issue seriously. However, the incident raises questions about quality control and the overall reliability of the new Whoop MG device.
