Phison Dominates Computex 2025: Crushing SSD Competition with Power Efficiency and Blazing Speeds

Phison is making waves at Computex 2025, showcasing its dominance in the SSD market with impressive innovations. From debunking competitor claims about power consumption to unveiling next-gen controllers and demonstrating mind-blowing RAID speeds, Phison is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the storage industry.

Power Efficiency vs. Silicon Motion

Phison is directly addressing claims made by Silicon Motion (SMI) regarding the power efficiency of their respective Gen5 SSD controllers. According to Phison's benchmarks, the E28 Gen5 SSD controller outperforms SMI's SM2508-based solution in various tests.

In Sequential Sustained Read power consumption, the E28 operates at 6.17W compared to 7.39W for SMI. Write tests show a similar advantage, with Phison consuming 6.06W versus SMI's 7.12W. While a 1W difference may seem small, it's a significant consideration for SSD performance and efficiency.

Unleashing Blazing Speeds

Phison's E28-based Gen5 SSD solution is also showcasing incredible speeds, reaching up to 14942.85 MB/s in Read and 14149.47 MB/s in Write benchmarks. Random 4K (Q1T1) benchmarks also demonstrate impressive performance at 92.19/368.45 MB/s. These speeds were achieved on an AMD Gen5 platform.

Next-Gen Controllers for Handhelds and Laptops

Phison is also unveiling the E31T "PS5031-E31T" M.2 SSD controller, a DRAM-less design perfect for handhelds and laptops. This solution can be adopted to 2230 and 2240 form factors, making it ideal for compact devices. The 2230 Gen5 SSD solution is expected to be integrated into a next-generation handheld from a major vendor soon.

This incredible performance was achieved using an AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7978WX CPU and Apex Storage X16 Gen5 add-in cards. A Phison representative confirmed that the Windows kernel was actually limiting the performance, suggesting even higher speeds are possible.

Enterprise SSDs for the AI Era

Phison is also focusing on the growing demand for AI-optimized storage solutions. The new Pascari X200Z enterprise SSD is designed for the high write endurance demands of generative AI and real-time analytics. It features a PCIe Gen5 NVMe interface with near-SCM latency and up to 60 DWPD endurance.

What does this mean for the future of storage?

Phison's advancements in power efficiency, speed, and AI-optimized storage are setting new standards in the industry. The company's focus on innovation positions them as a key player in the future of storage technology. Will Phison continue to push the boundaries of what's possible?
