Nintendo Switch 2: USB Mouse Support Confirmed, Offering a Familiar Control Option
The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz, and one exciting detail has emerged: it will support USB mice, offering players a potentially more comfortable and precise control method. This confirmation comes from a Koei Tecmo developer commentary video for Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening Complete Edition, showcasing the game's seamless integration of a standard USB mouse.

While the Switch 2 introduces the innovative Joy-Con 2 controller with a built-in "mouse mode," some users, including this writer, may find the prospect of prolonged use uncomfortable. The good news is that plugging in a traditional USB mouse appears to be a viable alternative, providing a familiar and potentially more ergonomic experience.
Producer Michi Ryu demonstrated the functionality, showing the Switch 2 recognizing the connected mouse and allowing seamless switching between it and the Joy-Con 2. As Ryu states (translated from Japanese), the USB mouse takes priority over the Joy-Con 2 when connected, and switching is very smooth.
This isn't the first time a Nintendo console has supported USB mice. The original Switch offered limited support, with games like Turok taking advantage. However, the expanded mouse support in the Switch 2 appears to be a more deliberate move by Nintendo.
Polygon had an early hands-on with the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, noting their potential but also mentioning the possibility of accidental button presses due to the controller's orientation. While some may adapt to the Joy-Con 2's unique approach, the option to use a USB mouse provides welcome flexibility.

The ability to switch between the Joy-Con 2 and a USB mouse could offer a compelling hybrid approach. As Koei Tecmo suggests , players can move around using the mouse while utilizing the Joy-Con 2's buttons for programmed shortcuts. Whether you embrace the new Joy-Con 2 or prefer a conventional mouse, the Nintendo Switch 2 is offering more control choices than ever before.
With at least 10 games reportedly supporting mouse controls, the Switch 2 is poised to offer a variety of gameplay experiences tailored to different preferences. The original Switch also supported USB mice. For example, Nintendo's visual programming tool Game Builder Garage worked with them. But the number of games supporting the Joy-Con mouse makes it a bigger deal on the Switch 2.
The confirmation of USB mouse support on the Nintendo Switch 2 is a welcome feature, providing players with more control options and potentially enhancing their gameplay experience. Will this flexibility affect your purchasing decision? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
