Marvel at the Milky Way: Stunning Photos Capture Our Galaxy’s Beauty in 2025
Prepare to be amazed by our galaxy! New breathtaking photographs showcase the ethereal beauty of the Milky Way as captured by talented photographers across the globe. From fiery volcanoes to serene beaches, these images reveal the awe-inspiring vistas our galaxy offers.
The 2025 Milky Way Photographer of the Year contest, curated by Capture the Atlas, has unveiled its winners, featuring 25 exceptional images. For the first time, the collection proudly includes a Milky Way photo taken from outer space, bridging the gap between science and art.

Among the winners is Don Pettit, a veteran NASA astronaut, whose image captured from the International Space Station (ISS) shows the Milky Way shimmering above Earth's atmosphere. This photo, titled "One in a Billion," emphasizes the privilege of witnessing our galaxy from such a unique vantage point. Pettit notes, "There are over eight billion people that call this planet home. There are seven of us that can say the same for Space Station. What a privilege it is to be here."
Other stunning images depict the Milky Way alongside diverse landscapes:

"Cosmic Fire" showcases Guatemala's Acatenango volcano erupting under the mesmerizing arc of the Milky Way. Sergio Montúfar, the photographer, described the scene: "Above, the Milky Way stretched diagonally across the sky, a mesmerizing band of stars contrasting with the chaos below. As the volcano erupted, the ash plume rose vertically...creating a stunning visual contrast between Earth's fury and the cosmos' serenity."

"Blossom" from Taiwan merges terrestrial beauty with the celestial, with alpine rhododendrons providing a colorful foreground to the Milky Way, with a vibrant display of the night sky thanks to the absence of light pollution.

"Starlit Ocean: A Comet, the setting Venus, the Milky Way, and McWay Falls" captured the comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) streaking above the Pacific and a setting Venus at McWay Falls in Big Sur.
These images remind us of the vastness and beauty of our universe, inviting us to contemplate our place within it. With dedication and patience, photographers can reveal hidden details and colors in the night sky we often overlook.
