Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Is This the End of the ‘Plus’ Model?

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is making waves, not just for its incredibly slim design, but also for what it might mean for the future of Samsung's smartphone lineup. Is it a niche device, or a sign that the 'Plus' model's days are numbered? Let's dive into the buzz surrounding this sleek new phone.

One of the immediate standouts of the S25 Edge is its thinness. In fact, one reviewer went to the extreme of comparing its 5.8mm profile to everyday objects. “I've spent the last two weeks writing about how thin Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge is, but I figured I'd really show you, by comparing it to a few everyday items,” notes Jesse Orrall of CNET. The results? It's about as thick as a slice of thin-crust pizza or four pennies stacked. While visually impressive, this commitment to thinness comes at a cost.

The slim design leads to compromises, notably in battery life. The S25 Edge packs a 3,900-mAh battery, the smallest in the S25 series. “The Galaxy S25 Edge's battery life is not good enough for a $1,100 phone,” argues Abrar Al-Heeti of CNET. The phone's battery life necessitates charging during the day, a significant concern for power users.

Adding to the battery concerns, the S25 Edge lacks a telephoto zoom camera and charges more slowly compared to its siblings. However, it does boast the ability to capture 4K video at 120 frames per second. The primary camera delivers sharp and colorful results but trying digital zoom will result in a noticeable quality decrease.

But is it all about the specs? Jamie, a Mobile Computing Staff Writer for TechRadar, suggests the S25 Edge could signal a shift in Samsung's strategy. “Now that the Galaxy S25 Edge is almost here, we know that the answer is a bit of both – and while the Galaxy S25 Edge has joined the existing lineup without replacing any of the existing models, I do think it could signal the beginning of the end for the Plus.”

According to sales figures, the Galaxy S25 Plus has consistently lagged behind both the standard S25 and the high-end Ultra. With the S25 Edge priced closely to the S25 Plus, and offering a similar large screen experience in an even more ergonomic package, the Plus model's reason for existence is becoming increasingly tenuous. Jamie argues, “the Galaxy S25 Edge embodies everything I like about the Galaxy S25 Plus... the Galaxy S25 Edge beats the Galaxy S25 Plus when it comes to ergonomics, and there are no compromises made with its excellent display.”

The release of the Galaxy S25 Edge, scheduled for May 30th, will be a crucial test. Will consumers embrace the ultra-thin design, even with its trade-offs? Or will the S25 Edge prove to be a one-off experiment, leaving the Galaxy S25 Plus to continue its reign as the larger, but perhaps less compelling, option?
