Apple’s iPhone 20: A Glimpse into the Future, But at What Cost?
Apple is reportedly planning a significant redesign for the iPhone in 2027, coinciding with the device's 20th anniversary. Dubbed the iPhone 20, this model is rumored to feature a "major shake-up," with a greater emphasis on glass construction. While exciting, this new design could come with a hefty price tag, potentially making it the most expensive iPhone ever.

According to reports, the increased use of glass in the iPhone 20's design will make manufacturing "extraordinarily complex" and require new production techniques. This complexity translates to higher production costs, which Apple will likely pass on to consumers. Furthermore, the manufacturing process may need to remain in China, despite Apple's efforts to diversify its production to countries like India.
Tariffs play a significant role in the potential price surge. Current tariffs on goods imported from China can reach as high as 145%, and even 245% in some cases. If these tariffs remain in place when the iPhone 20 launches, the already expensive device could see its price doubled, potentially surpassing even the foldable iPhone's price point. The final decision is subject to trade talks with China and the US government.
The report by MoneyControl suggests Apple intends to manufacture 60 million iPhones in India by the end of 2026, specifically for the US market, however, it's uncertain that new models can be made outside of China for the first run. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman stated that Apple has never produced a major new design outside of China and that it is likely to continue with this trend for its foldable iPhone and 20th anniversary iPhone model. These devices are expected to launch in 2027.
The iPhone 20 isn't the only rumored device in Apple's pipeline. A foldable iPhone is also reportedly in development, featuring a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display. This foldable device is expected to be priced between $2,000 and $2,500, potentially setting a new benchmark for iPhone prices. It’s mass production is expected to begin in the final quarter of 2026.
The future of iPhone design and manufacturing is facing a number of hurdles. Can Apple overcome these logistic and monetary challenges to provide a cutting edge device at an accessible price point? Time will tell. This uncertainty highlights the complexities of global trade and its impact on consumer technology.
