Nintendo’s Latest Switch Update: Preparing for the Switch 2 Era with Virtual Game Cards and Enhanced Sharing
Nintendo has just dropped a significant update for the original Switch, version 20.0.0, signaling preparations for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. This update isn't just a routine patch; it introduces features designed to bridge the gap between the current console and its successor, focusing on digital game management and system transfer.
One of the standout features is the introduction of Virtual Game Cards. These virtual cards represent digital software and DLC, allowing users to 'load' and 'eject' games between two different Switch systems. This system aims to streamline the sharing of digital titles within a Nintendo Account family group. Think of it as a digital version of lending physical game cartridges to your friends or family.
GameShare is another key addition, although its full potential will only be realized with the arrival of the Switch 2. GameShare will allow Switch 2 owners to share compatible games with Switch 1 players over local wireless connections, bringing back the Download Play concept from the Nintendo DS era. This means you can play multiplayer games even if only one player owns the title.
How do Virtual Game Cards work? Nintendo’s guide details the ins and outs of this new system. Each Switch can only be connected to one other Switch at a time, and the system allows game card management from the web, including hiding or unhiding specific cards. Nintendo is also relying on Online License Settings, allowing users to play digitally purchased games and DLC as long as they are connected to the internet without needing a virtual game card loaded.
For those planning to upgrade, the update includes a System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2 option, found under the System menu in System Settings. Users can upload system transfer data to the cloud, ready for download on a Switch 2, eliminating the need to access their old system. However, be warned: this will factory reset your Switch 1. If you cancel a cloud transfer, the data can only be reloaded onto the same Switch OLED model it originated from.
GameSpot notes that this update also tweaks the colors of the eShop and News icons and adds the ability to transfer multiple save data at once. The Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch News icon colors on the HOME Menu have been changed. Multiple save data can be selected and transferred at once in "Transfer Your Save Data" menu.
Despite these upgrades, some limitations exist. Virtual Game Cards can be borrowed for up to 14 days, and the lending system won't have access to that game/DLC while it's loaned out. A lender can only lend one Game Card per borrower, up to three borrowers simultaneously, and a borrower can only borrow one Game Card.
This update suggests Nintendo is laying the groundwork for a seamless transition to the Switch 2, adding more functionality for digital game sharing. Virtual Game Cards and GameShare are designed to make managing and sharing digital content easier, particularly for families. It remains to be seen how much more beneficial this system will be compared with the previous version.
