End of the Line for Old Google Nest Thermostats: What You Need to Know

If you're still relying on a first or second-generation Google Nest Learning Thermostat, it's time to prepare for a change. Google has announced it will be ending support for these older models on October 25, 2025, effectively cutting off their smart features. This news has sparked both frustration and understanding among users, given the devices' impressive lifespan.

The affected models include the original first-generation Nest Learning Thermostat (2011), the second-generation Nest Learning Thermostat (2012), and the second generation of the European version (2014). After the cutoff date, these thermostats will still function for basic temperature control and pre-set schedules, but they'll lose all connectivity with the Nest app, Google Home app, and Google Assistant. This means no more remote control, notifications, or integration with other smart home devices like Nest Protect smoke detectors. Furthermore, expect no further software or security updates.

"Goodbye, Europe" Google is also pulling its thermostats out of the European market entirely, citing the unique and diverse heating systems that make building for the region challenging.

While this might seem like a forced obsolescence, the reality is that these thermostats have had a long run. The original Nest Learning Thermostat is over 14 years old, a rare feat in the tech world. To soften the blow, Google is offering a $130 discount on the latest fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, bringing the price down to $150. This discount aims to encourage users to upgrade and benefit from the latest features and security enhancements. Maria Diaz of ZDNET calls the 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostat "a beautiful piece of tech that works" and one that "you can count on working for years -- or maybe even decades".

Not sure which generation of Nest Thermostat you have? Google has a guide to help distinguish between the models, often identifiable by subtle differences in size, shape, and the logos on the mounting plate. Check your thermostat now to see if you are affected.

The decision to end support for older models allows Google to focus its resources on developing and improving its latest thermostat technology. Google stated it was making the change to “fully invest” in the latest generation of thermostats.

The move raises questions about the lifespan of smart home devices and the balance between innovation and longevity. Is a nearly 50 percent discount a good offer? Are consumers right to feel a little upset about such a firm cutoff date?
