Doom: The Dark Ages – A Medieval Twist on a Classic and Echoes of God of War

Doom: The Dark Ages is poised to deliver a fresh take on the iconic franchise, drawing intriguing parallels with the evolution seen in the God of War series. Shifting from high-speed, high-tech mayhem to a more strategic, medieval-inspired combat system, the game promises a unique experience for both longtime fans and newcomers.

The Doomslayer faces new challenges in Doom: The Dark Ages.

The upcoming title encourages players to slow down and strategically engage larger hordes of enemies in a medieval setting. This shift is reflected in the arsenal of new weapons, designed to tackle familiar foes in innovative ways. The game's directors hinted at this fundamental difference, emphasizing the "stand and fight" approach that requires a methodical playstyle.

One of the most significant revelations is the introduction of the Cosmic Realm, a Lovecraftian dimension that promises to be unlike anything seen before in a Doom game. This unholy union between Hell and the Cosmic Realm brings forth new adversaries, such as the Cosmic Baron and a newly designed Cacodemon hybrid. To counter these threats, players will wield the Reaver Chainshot, a brutal ballistic iron mace of death, adding a new dimension to the game's melee combat.

But the similarities don't end with just combat and setting. The Doom Slayer's journey seems to mirror Kratos' path in God of War – facing the consequences of past carnage. Just as Kratos sought a quiet life after exacting vengeance on the Greek gods, the Doom Slayer's past actions have garnered unwanted attention from higher powers.

Kratos' journey shares surprising parallels with the Doom Slayer's upcoming adventure.

Furthermore, both titles feature weapon mechanic parallels. The Doom Slayer trades his chainsaw for the Shield Saw, a throwable weapon reminiscent of Kratos' Leviathan Axe. This shared mechanic keeps players actively engaged in combat, even at a slower pace.

Technical advancements are also a key highlight. Doom: The Dark Ages is built on the all-new idTech 8 engine, promising cutting-edge graphics, dynamic lighting powered by raytracing, and buttery-smooth 60 fps performance on PlayStation 5. The file size for the game is approximately 84GB on PS5.

Notably, Doom: The Dark Ages will not include multiplayer, focusing instead on delivering an epic single-player campaign. Reviews for the game are expected to drop on May 9th, signaling confidence in its quality ahead of its official release on May 15th.
