Get Ready, Trainers! New ‘Black and White’ Pokémon TCG Set Introduces Ultra-Rare Cards
Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) enthusiasts, prepare to rev up your decks! The Pokémon Company has announced a special set celebrating the 15th anniversary of the beloved Pokémon Black and White games. But this isn't just a nostalgia trip – it's bringing an entirely new level of rarity to the card game.
The new set, known as 'Black Bolt' and 'White Flare' in Japan, is slated for a June 6th release and promises to be a game-changer. It will feature all 156 Pokémon from the Unova region, captivating fans with a wave of familiar faces. What truly sets this release apart is the introduction of 'BWR' rarity, believed to stand for 'Black White Rare,' which will be the highest rarity tier in the set.

Initially showcased with Reshiram, Zekrom, and Victini, these BWR cards boast stunning, single-color designs that are rarely seen. Imagine holding a card that's almost entirely black or white! The unique aesthetic combined with the extreme rarity is already fueling speculation about their potential value on the resale market.
According to VGC, Western fans can expect the set to arrive approximately one month after the Japanese release, possibly under a different name that reflects the international market. While the exact details for territories outside of Japan remains unconfirmed, expectations are high for a summer 2025 release.
However, the excitement is tempered by concerns about scalpers. Recent expansions like Destined Rivals and Prismatic Evolutions were plagued by supply issues and inflated resale prices. The Pokémon Company has acknowledged these challenges and is working to increase production, but only time will tell if these efforts are enough to prevent the inevitable rush for these ultra-rare cards.
This set will be the equivalent of what Scarlet and Violet 151 was to Generation 1, with Illustration Rare or Special Illustration Rare variants for all 156 Unova Pokémon. Aside from individual booster packs, TPC has also announced a deluxe pack containing five boosters, along with an Illustration Rare card and a three-pack set with a bonus promo Victini IR card.
Adding more to the old memory feeling, Black Bolt and White Flare will mark the return of the so-called Tinsel Holofoil paper, characterized by bold horizontal stripes. It brings all the memories to those who have been playing cards since the Black and White series.
