iPhone 18 Pro Rumors: Under-Display Face ID and a Blast from the Past Design?

The rumor mill is churning, and this time, it's focused on the potential design of the iPhone 18 Pro models, slated for a 2026 release. Could Apple be revisiting design elements from the Android world while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of display technology? Let's dive into the latest whispers.

According to leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple is currently testing under-display Face ID technology for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This move would allow Apple to ditch the Dynamic Island (or at least shrink it significantly) in favor of a single, small hole in the display.

But here's where things get interesting. Another report suggests this single hole could be positioned in the top left corner of the screen –  a design reminiscent of the Pixel 5a and other Android phones from a few years ago.

This decision, if true, would mark a significant departure from Apple's current design language.

The potential move to under-display Face ID is significant for several reasons. For years, Android phones have offered near bezel-less screens, often at the expense of robust facial recognition. By integrating Face ID under the display, Apple could offer a cleaner, more streamlined design without sacrificing the security that its 3D face scanning provides.

It's important to note that these are just rumors, and Apple is likely experimenting with various designs. However, the sources seem confident that the iPhone 18 Pro models are being tested with under-display Face ID.

While the Pro models potentially embrace this radical change, the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Air are expected to retain the Dynamic Island, creating a more distinct visual difference between the Pro and non-Pro models.

The reports don't say what Apple will do with the Dynamic Island software functionality if they move to under-display Face ID. Will they adapt the software to work around the single camera hole, or will the feature be replaced entirely by the time the iPhone 18 series launches?

The move to under-display Face ID is a technological challenge, integrating the Face ID sensors without affecting performance or display quality. If successful, Apple could offer a noticeably cleaner design that many users have been anticipating, assuming the technology works reliably.

What do you think about these potential changes for the iPhone 18 Pro? Are you excited about the prospect of under-display Face ID and a more seamless display, or do you prefer the current Dynamic Island design? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
