Nintendo’s Next Chapter: Switch Sales Soar, Switch 2 Forecasts Fuel Optimism

Nintendo continues its reign in the gaming world, announcing impressive sales figures for the Nintendo Switch while gearing up for the highly anticipated launch of its successor, the Switch 2. With worldwide sales topping 152.12 million units as of March 31, 2025, the Switch has solidified its place as one of the best-selling consoles of all time.

The latest earnings release reveals that 1.26 million Switch hardware units were sold during the three months ending March 31, 2025, along with 31.43 million software units. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to dominate sales charts with a staggering 68.20 million copies sold, followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 47.82 million.

Among the newly announced sales figures, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD has already topped 1.27 million units upon release, showcasing the enduring appeal of classic Nintendo franchises. Over 1,391.23 million Switch games have been sold worldwide, demonstrating the platform's robust software ecosystem.

Looking ahead, Nintendo is forecasting sales of 15 million Switch 2 consoles and 45 million software units for the fiscal year 2026, which ends on March 31, 2026. The Switch 2, expected to launch in June, is already generating significant buzz among investors and gamers alike. The console is slated to launch at $449.99, with enhanced features.

The company expects net sales of 1.9 trillion yen, a 63% year-on-year rise. Net profit expected to jump 7.6% to 300 billion yen.

According to Reuters, President Shuntaro Furukawa said imposing additional tariffs and adjusting prices may decrease demand in the U.S., and duties could hit profit by tens of billions of yen.

To further incentivize the Switch 2 purchase, Nintendo will release two titles, Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour on launch. Also, Switch 2 versions of previous games will be available such as Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo's success in extending the life of the original Switch, launched in 2017, can be attributed to its iconic characters, popular franchises, and expansion into films. Investors are optimistic as shares are up around 30% this year.
