NASA Unveils Stunning 3D Tour of Webb Telescope’s Iconic ‘Cosmic Cliffs’
Prepare for an awe-inspiring journey through space as NASA has released a breathtaking 3D visualization of the James Webb Space Telescope's (JWST) famous 'Cosmic Cliffs' image. This new immersive experience brings the Carina Nebula to life, allowing viewers to explore the stunning landscape in a whole new way. The visualization, titled "Exploring the Cosmic Cliffs in 3D," was created by NASA’s Universe of Learning and debuted at the International Planetarium Society's 100th-anniversary celebration in Munich, Germany.
The original 'Cosmic Cliffs' image, revealed in July 2022 as one of JWST's first five photos, quickly became iconic. Now, thanks to visualization experts at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), Caltech/IPAC, and NASA’s Universe of Learning AstroViz project, viewers can experience the nebula's three-dimensional structure.
Frank Summers, principal visualization scientist and leader of the AstroViz Project at STScI, explains, "Bringing this amazing Webb image to life helps the public to comprehend the three-dimensional structure inherent in the 2D image, and to develop a better mental model of the universe."
What looks like 'mountains' and 'valleys' are actually part of the nebula Gum 31, which contains the young star cluster NGC 3324. Both are part of the vast Carina Nebula Complex, located approximately 7,600 light-years away. The ultraviolet light and stellar winds from the stars in NGC 3324 have carved out a cavernous area within Gum 31, revealing a dynamic and ever-changing environment.
The visualization also reveals bright, yellow streaks and arcs, which are outflows from young, still-forming stars embedded within the Cosmic Cliffs. Viewers can even see a protostellar jet in the upper right portion of the image, offering a glimpse into the intense processes of star formation.
The larger video exhibit, featuring this new visualization, is currently being showcased at nearly 200 museums and planetariums across the United States. More interactive and educational visualizations of the cosmos are available from ViewSpace.
