Cannom's career spanned over four decades, beginning in the late 1970s with films like *It Lives Again* and *The Fury*. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent, leading to collaborations on iconic horror films like *The Lost Boys*, *The Exorcist III*, and *Alien 3*. His versatility allowed him to seamlessly transition into mainstream cinema, where he worked with acclaimed directors like James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg.

One of Cannom's early roles was as an assistant to Rick Baker on *It Lives Again*. Cannom not only worked on the effects but also played the part of one of them. Cannom had an early career breakthrough in the 1980s, providing director Joel Schumacher with vampire effects on The Lost Boys.

Cannom's artistry reached its peak with unforgettable transformations in films such as *Bram Stoker's Dracula*, *Mrs. Doubtfire*, and *The Curious Case of Benjamin Button*. His ability to age actors convincingly, create fantastical creatures, and enhance character features earned him four Academy Awards and a Technical Achievement Award in 2005. He once stated that Francis Ford Coppola gave him complete license to create the aged look for Gary Oldman in *Bram Stoker's Dracula*, which resulted in a truly unforgettable signature visual for the movie.

His work on *Mrs. Doubtfire*, in particular, remains a testament to his skill in seamlessly altering actors' appearances. Ve Neill and Yolanda Toussieng built upon his designs. Another particularly celebrated project was his work on *Vice*, where he had to transform Christian Bale into Dick Cheney. Cannom recalled the moment when Bale was fully convinced by the illusion and became excited about the role.

Fellow SFX legend Rick Baker shared a tribute on Instagram. In 2023, Variety reported that a GoFundMe had been launched for Cannom to assist with medical expenses.

Cannom's final film credit was for the prosthetics in *The Eyes of Tammy Faye*. He will be remembered for his groundbreaking contributions to the art of special effects makeup, his dedication to his craft, and his ability to bring characters to life in truly remarkable ways.
