Nintendo Announces GameCube Library for Switch 2: Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and More Coming Soon!

Get ready for a blast from the past! Nintendo has officially announced that a curated selection of GameCube titles will be coming to the Switch 2 console via the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. This exciting news means that fans both old and new will be able to experience some of the most beloved games from the GameCube era on Nintendo's next-generation platform.

The initial lineup of titles will launch alongside the Switch 2, currently slated for June 5, 2025, and includes iconic games such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, the adrenaline-pumping racer F-Zero GX, and the fighting classic Soul Calibur II. While the initial offering is limited to these three titles, Nintendo has teased that more games are on the way.

According to a recent video from Nintendo Life, there's a wish list of games that fans are hoping to see on the service. Alex and Zion highlighted 10 titles they'd love to see added, including Animal Crossing, Star Fox: Assault, Phantasy Star Online, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, TimeSplitters 2, Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Luigi's Mansion (already confirmed), Star Fox Adventures, and Doshin The Giant. This diverse list showcases the breadth of fantastic experiences the GameCube had to offer.

It's important to note that access to the GameCube library is exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers who also own a Switch 2 console. This means that even if you have the existing subscription on your original Switch, you'll need to upgrade to the new console to take advantage of this feature. Similarly, the new wireless GameCube controller is also designed exclusively for the Switch 2.

However, Nintendo has already hinted at other titles being added to GameCube library such as Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Strikers, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Luigi’s Mansion, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, Pokemon Colosseum and Chibi-Robo.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions from fans. Some are thrilled at the prospect of revisiting these classic games, while others are hoping for full remakes rather than simple ports. This is true for example for Wind Waker that already got an HD Remaster for Wii U.

The return of the GameCube library is a smart move by Nintendo to add extra value to its next-generation platform. It provides nostalgic appeal for long-time fans and introduces a new generation of gamers to these timeless classics.
