MSI Claw 8 AI+: A Bold Refresh or Just a New Coat of Paint?

MSI is back with a fresh take on its Claw handheld gaming PC, but is it enough to stand out in a crowded market? The MSI Claw 8 AI+ Polar Tempest Edition aims to make waves, but faces stiff competition from the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally.

The new Polar Tempest edition offers a sleek black and white color scheme, a departure from the original Sandstorm version. While aesthetically pleasing, the most significant upgrade seems to be the optional 2TB storage, catering to gamers with extensive libraries.

According to a review from T3 Magazine in May 2025 , the MSI Claw includes a sleek, compact design that can handle plenty of power, and is similar to the ROG Ally in performance.

The MSI Claw 8 AI+ is powered by the Intel Lunar Lake based Core Ultra 7 258V processor. Reviews suggest the device delivers impressive performance. One reviewer even states that games like Cyberpunk 2077 are easily playable with decent FPS, even with Ray Tracing enabled.

One of the standout features highlighted in reviews, is the device's cooling system. The Cooler Boost HyperFlow technology keeps the device running cool and quiet, even under demanding workloads. This is a major plus for extended gaming sessions.

The 8-inch FHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and VRR offers a crisp and immersive gaming experience. The inclusion of Hall Effect joysticks promises smooth and responsive control, minimizing stick drift issues.

However, the MSI Claw 8 AI+ faces challenges. Its price point, starting at €1100 EUR or $999 USD, is a significant barrier. The Steam Deck's competitive pricing and optimizations, along with the expanding ROG Ally lineup, put pressure on MSI's market position. Additionally, one review notes that the M-Center software could use further development, as other software options such as Armoury Crate and AyaSpace offer a more enjoyable useability.

The inclusion of an Xbox button for deeper integration with the Xbox ecosystem is not present, a potential missed opportunity for some gamers.

The MSI Claw 8 AI+ Polar Tempest Edition offers a compelling package with its powerful hardware, excellent display, and effective cooling system. However, its high price and stiff competition may limit its appeal. Is the new color and optional 2TB storage enough to sway gamers? What are your thoughts on the MSI Claw 8 AI+?
