Google Keep Web Finally Gets Rich Text Formatting: A Long-Awaited Update

For years, Google Keep users have clamored for feature parity between the mobile and web versions of the popular note-taking app. Now, that wait is finally over. Google has announced that rich text formatting is rolling out to the Google Keep web app, bringing it in line with the Android experience. This update, almost two years after its initial mobile release, promises to significantly enhance the user experience on desktops.

Rich text formatting finally arrives on Google Keep web app.

According to a Google Workspace blog post, the update is rolling out to Google Workspace, Workspace Individual, and personal Google account users. The new formatting options are accessible via an underlined "A" button located in the bottom left-hand corner of the updated text editor. Clicking this button unveils a toolbar packed with formatting tools, allowing users to bold, *italicize*, underline, and remove formatting. Users can also convert regular text into H1 or H2 headers, adding structure and clarity to their notes.

"We're excited to announce the expansion of this to Keep on web," Google stated. "Now users can customize and add emphasis to their text through bolding, underlining, italicizing, and heading styles."

This addition of rich text formatting addresses a long-standing deficiency in the web app. The lack of formatting options on the web often made it challenging to organize notes effectively, especially for users who rely heavily on the desktop version. The new formatting tools should make it easier to prioritize information and create visually appealing notes.

Key Features of the Google Keep Web Update:

  • Rich Text Formatting: Bold, italicize, underline, and remove formatting options.
  • Heading Styles: Convert text into H1 and H2 headers for better organization.
  • Accessibility: New formatting options are housed in the underlined “A” button for easy access.

While the update is rolling out gradually, with full availability expected in the coming weeks, the initial response has been positive. Users are already praising the new features for their potential to improve productivity and organization. A significant omission, however, is the lack of hyperlink support, a feature many users hope will be added in a future update.
