Tony Hawk’s Underground Remaster? The Birdman’s Campaign Begins

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 is almost here, slated for a July 11th release on Switch (and potentially Switch 2), but fans are already looking ahead. What's next for the iconic skateboarding franchise? Could a Tony Hawk's Underground remaster be on the horizon? Recent comments from Tony Hawk himself are fueling the fire.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant at THPS Fest, Tony Hawk was asked about the possibility of a THUG remaster. His response? "I always have aspirations. It's not up to me generally. I'll campaign all I can, but I'm working with a much bigger company that's a lot smarter than me." While not a confirmation, it's a clear indication that Hawk is interested in revisiting the Underground series.

However, Hawk tempered expectations, clarifying that an Underground remaster hasn't been formally discussed at Activision. Its feasibility likely hinges on the commercial success of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4. "We haven't even released this game," he pointed out.

Why is Tony Hawk's Underground such a popular choice for a remaster? Unlike the more arcade-focused Pro Skater games, Underground offered a unique story-driven experience. Players created their own skaters and navigated the world of underground competitions. The focus shifted to a more narrative-heavy, adventure-like gameplay, setting it apart from its predecessors.

The original Tony Hawk's Underground launched on GameCube and Game Boy Advance in the early 2000s, quickly gaining a dedicated following. Given the recent revival of the Pro Skater series, and the popularity of the Underground titles, a remaster seems like a logical next step if THPS 3+4 does well.

Activision appears to be approaching the Tony Hawk's franchise cautiously. After the mixed reception of 2015's Pro Skater 5, the company seems to be carefully evaluating each new release. The five-year gap between 2020's THPS 1 + 2 and the upcoming THPS 3 + 4 highlights this measured approach.

Will Tony Hawk's campaign be enough to convince Activision? The success of Pro Skater 3 + 4 will undoubtedly play a crucial role. Fans eager to revisit the story-driven world of Tony Hawk's Underground should make their voices heard. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that we could be seeing the return of THUG.
