Blue Protocol: Star Resonance Set to Revive Anime MMORPG Hopes in the West in 2025

After a rollercoaster ride of cancellations and resurrections, the anime-inspired MMORPG Blue Protocol is making a comeback to Western audiences in 2025. Originally slated for a Western release by Amazon Games, the project was shelved, leaving fans disappointed. However, Blue Protocol: Star Resonance, developed by Bokura (a Tencent-owned studio) in collaboration with Bandai Namco, is now gearing up to launch on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, targeting English-speaking players in North America, Europe, and Latin America.

The original Blue Protocol faced a mixed reception in Japan, leading to the difficult decision to shut down its Japanese servers. Bandai Namco reportedly experienced staff reductions following the cancellation. However, the core concept, and now Blue Protocol: Star Resonance, promises to deliver a dynamic combat system, a vibrant anime-styled open world, deep character customization, and plenty of opportunities for social interaction through trading, guilds, and community events.

Star Resonance is set in the same universe as the original, Regnas, but features a reworked storyline. Players can expect a sprawling open world filled with dungeons and raids, designed for group play reminiscent of Final Fantasy 14. Key features touted include extensive character customization in appearance, combat style, and battle traits, with a roster of classes such as Heavy Guardian, Stormblade, Wind Knight, Marksman, Frost Mage, Verdant Oracle, and Shield Knight. The original classes, like the fan-favorite Twin Striker, may even reappear.

While an exact release date beyond 2025 remains elusive, anticipation is building. This new iteration, Blue Protocol: Star Resonance, aims to capture the hearts of MMORPG fans seeking a compelling narrative, stunning visuals, and engaging community features. For those who have been searching for a colorful, online anime adventure outside of the gacha-heavy titles, this could be the game to watch.
