Google’s AI-Powered Search Overhaul: “I’m Feeling Lucky” Button on the Chopping Block?
Google is reportedly testing significant changes to its search engine, potentially impacting how users interact with the platform. A key element of this shift involves the integration of AI Mode, a chatbot-like feature, directly into the search interface.
According to user reports on platforms like X and Threads, Google is experimenting with different placements for the AI Mode tab. In some instances, it appears within the search bar itself, next to the 'search by image' button. More drastically, it's being tested as a replacement for the iconic 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button. This button, a staple of Google's homepage since its launch, directly takes users to the first webpage of their search results. The potential removal of 'I'm Feeling Lucky' signals a major directional shift.
The AI Mode button’s appearance is also undergoing experimentation. Some users have reported seeing a rotating rainbow border when hovering over it, while others experience this as the default design when it replaces 'I'm Feeling Lucky'. This vibrant design choice suggests Google wants the AI chatbot to stand out amongst other offerings.
Google initially announced on May 1st, that a small percentage of US users would begin seeing the AI Mode option in Google Search. These tests provide insight into where this feature may be placed to the public. For now, Google spokesperson Ashley Thompson clarified that AI Mode in Search is currently limited to users within Google's experimental Labs environment.
"We often test different ways for people to access our helpful features," Thompson stated. "This is just one of many experiments."
It remains uncertain whether the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button will be permanently replaced by AI Mode. However, the fact that Google is considering this move has sparked debate amongst users. This could signal that Google believes AI Mode’s chatbot responses are a more efficient method than immediately directing users to a webpage.

Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, has also confirmed that Google is actively working on streamlining the sharing process for AI Overviews and AI Mode responses. While specific details are scarce, Stein responded to a request on X (formerly Twitter) to include a "share as screenshot" option, indicating that enhanced sharing features are in development.
The current sharing options include:
- Copy text
- Draft in Gmail
- Google Docs
Given Google's track record, it's reasonable to expect a broader rollout of sharing features, possibly coinciding with the Google I/O event. Stein's response, "working on making sharing easier!" further reinforces this expectation.
