Nintendo Unveils Wireless GameCube Controller for Switch 2: A Nostalgic Throwback with Modern Features
Get ready for a wave of nostalgia! Nintendo has officially revealed a brand-new wireless GameCube controller designed specifically for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This announcement, made via the Nintendo Today! mobile app, has sent waves of excitement through the gaming community. The controller is set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5th and will be compatible with the GameCube library available through the Switch Online Expansion Pack.
The new controller is a faithful recreation of the original GameCube design, but with some modern enhancements. A video released by Nintendo showcased the controller's features, including the addition of a ZL button for enhanced gameplay. Stealth40k captured the reveal, allowing fans to see the controller in detail:

The unveiling also offered button clicks and analog stick rotations in an ASMR fashion, and Nintendo demonstrated more gameplay footage of SoulCalibur II, one of the launch titles alongside Zelda: Wind Waker and F-Zero GX.
The wireless GameCube controller, priced at $64.99, is currently available for preorder for those with a Switch Online account. A limit of one controller per account aims to manage high demand. Early birds who secured their preorder can expect delivery on the Switch 2's launch day. Pre-orders are handled through the My Nintendo Store, so you'll need to check local availability.
While GameCube controller support isn't new to the Switch (thanks to adapters), compatibility for this wireless version is somewhat restricted. It won't support backwards compatible titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – at least, not yet confirmed. Its primary use is intended for GameCube games within the Switch Online Expansion Pack tier. This move emphasizes Nintendo's focus on delivering a premium experience for classic titles on its new console.

Beyond the classic design, this controller includes USB-C charging for modern convenience. It also features the C button, which will be used to access GameChat features. Notably, GameChat will be free for all Nintendo Switch 2 owners through March 31st, 2026.
