Windows 10 KB5058379 Update: BitLocker Lockouts and Blue Screen Crashes Plague Users

The latest Windows 10 KB5058379 update is causing major headaches for users, with reports of BitLocker recovery screens and even blue screen crashes (BSOD) surfacing across the web. This mandatory security update, intended to protect systems, is inadvertently locking some users out of their machines. Let's delve into the details of this troublesome update and potential workarounds.

According to Windows Latest, the KB5058379 update is forcing some PCs into Windows Recovery, requiring a BitLocker key for access. In the worst cases, users are facing the dreaded BSOD. The issue seems to primarily affect devices with Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) enabled on 10th generation or later Intel vPro processors, as confirmed by Microsoft in a support document updated on May 17.

Microsoft acknowledges the issue, stating, “We are aware of a known issue on devices with Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) enabled on 10th generation or later Intel vPro processors.” They are urgently working on a resolution and plan to release an out-of-band update to the Microsoft Update Catalog.

What should you do if you're affected?

The immediate step is to locate your 48-digit BitLocker recovery key. Windows Latest suggests that users reboot into BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F2, F10/F12, or Esc immediately after powering on) and disable Intel TXT in the security settings. This could also be referred to as Trusted Execution, or OS Kernel DMA Support. After saving changes and exiting BIOS, the update should be able to install without triggering BitLocker Recovery or BSOD.

“The idea is to disable Intel TXT / Trusted Execution and allow KB5058379 to finish installation. If you followed the steps correctly, you won’t run into BitLocker Recovery or BSOD,” Windows Latest explains.

However, disabling Intel TXT might not be feasible for all users or systems. Reports indicate that even after disabling Intel TXT, some users continue to experience issues. Other recommended workarounds include disabling Secure Boot, Virtualization Technologies, or Firmware Protection directly from the BIOS.

Affected users are also reporting LSASS errors and installation failure events with 0x800F0845 errors in the System event log. While some devices successfully roll back the update after failures, others remain trapped in the BitLocker recovery loop.

It's also worth noting that Windows 11 is reportedly unaffected by this specific issue.

Is this a recurring problem?

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time Windows updates have triggered BitLocker issues. In August 2024, a similar problem arose after installing the July 2024 Windows security updates. Another instance occurred in August 2022 with the KB5012170 security update.

The Big Picture

The KB5058379 update highlights the delicate balance between security enhancements and system stability. While the update aims to protect Windows 10 systems, its implementation has caused significant disruption for many users. The good news is that Microsoft is aware of the problem and actively working on a fix. In the meantime, affected users should try the suggested workarounds and stay tuned for official updates.
