SpaceX Makes Strategic Acquisition to Bolster Supply Chain Amidst Industry Growth

SpaceX has made a significant move to strengthen its supply chain by acquiring substantially all of the assets of Akoustis Technologies, Inc., a manufacturer of patented bulk acoustic wave (BAW) high-band RF filters. The acquisition, conducted through SpaceX's wholly-owned subsidiary, Tune Holdings Corp., comes at a time when the space industry is experiencing remarkable growth and facing increasing demands for reliable component sourcing.

The deal, valued at approximately $30.2 million in cash and the assumption of certain liabilities, was completed following a court-approved auction process after Akoustis filed for bankruptcy in December 2024. According to a statement from SpaceX, the acquisition includes substantially all of Akoustis’s assets, with the exception of those owned by debtor Grinding and Dicing Services, Inc.

Mark Podgainy, Finance Transformation Officer of Akoustis, expressed optimism about the acquisition, stating, “We are pleased to close this strategic transaction, which will maximize value for our creditors and preserve the vast majority of our employees’ jobs. We are grateful to our loyal customers, suppliers and employees who have stood with us through this process.”

This move aligns with a broader trend of US manufacturers seeking to onshore their supply chains, particularly in response to previous trade policies. While not directly related to tariffs, this acquisition strategically positions SpaceX to have greater control over its critical component sourcing, mitigating potential risks and ensuring a more stable supply chain. Cofactr’s acquisition of Cogbase is another signal of this onshoring trend.

The future looks promising for the space industry, with a recent report projecting the global space economy to reach $944 billion by 2033. This growth underscores the importance of strategic acquisitions like SpaceX’s, as companies strive to secure their position in a rapidly expanding market. The acquisition also aligns with SpaceX's vertical integration strategy, enabling the company to control more of its production process and potentially reduce costs in the long run.

Meanwhile, not all companies in the space sector are seeing purely positive news. Redwire's stock recently experienced a dip (6.5% by market close) following some delays with US contracts. The company attempted to assuage investors by explaining that variations in contract values from quarter to quarter are normal; this highlights some of the inherent volatility that can occur in the space economy. In contrast, MDA Space reported strong Q1 2025 financial results, showcasing the diversity of performance within the industry.

The Akoustis acquisition provides SpaceX with access to next-generation BAW high-band RF filters. These filters are crucial for various wireless applications, potentially enhancing SpaceX's capabilities in satellite communications and other areas. Analysts suggest that this deal will also diminish front-end phone heat and improve battery drain in devices using the technology coming out of Akoustis.

SpaceX's acquisition of Akoustis comes at a pivotal moment for both companies and the space industry as a whole. By integrating Akoustis's technology and expertise, SpaceX is poised to further its mission of space exploration and technological advancement. This acquisition highlights the strategic importance of securing reliable supply chains and investing in cutting-edge technology in the ever-evolving space landscape.
