Google I/O 2025: Expect Android 16, Gemini AI, and More

Google I/O 2025 is almost here, kicking off on Tuesday, May 20th! This annual developer conference is a pivotal event for Google, offering a sneak peek into the company's latest projects and priorities for the coming year. From Android to AI, expect a deluge of announcements.

Google seems to have so much to share that they even held a dedicated Android showcase the week before! The presentation featured Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat, who took over for Burke in 2024, showcased the new Material 3 Expressive design, and some previously leaked features, like the "Ongoing notifications" bar were confirmed. Material 3 Expressive is also coming to Wear OS 6, and Gemini is expanding to smartwatches, Android Auto, and Google TV!

But Google isn't the only tech giant making waves. Microsoft is hosting its Build developer conference, unveiling an updated Copilot AI app. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang highlighted a partnership with Foxconn to develop an "AI factory supercomputer" powered by 10,000 Blackwell AI chips at Computex! Even Meta held its LlamaCon AI conference. These events set the stage for intense competition in the tech landscape, and Google I/O 2025 is their chance to respond!

Android 16: What's New?

The Android Show already revealed some exciting details. Android 16 is expected to arrive before the second half of the year, with a beta version already available to developers. One anticipated feature is Auracast support, simplifying connections and switching between multiple Bluetooth devices and enabling Bluetooth audio support hearing aids that are paired with phones or tablets. The operating system will also receive new scam-detection features and a refined Find Hub that will see support for satellite connectivity later in the year.

Android XR and Project Moohan

Don't forget about Android XR! After past XR project failures, Google is partnering with Samsung on a headset codenamed Project Moohan. Will we see a demo at I/O? Stay tuned!

AI Takes Center Stage

With the Android announcements already made, expect AI to dominate Google I/O 2025. Could Project Astra, the voice assistant with advanced image recognition, get an update? Google is an AI company now, reflecting this in every I/O moving forward.

A Pinterest Competitor?

Rumors suggest Google might unveil its version of Pinterest at I/O, offering users a way to save and curate images based on their queries. Think Cosmos, but perhaps directly integrated with Search.

Wear OS 6 is coming with Material 3 Expressive and Gemini. Will we learn more at I/O?
