Google I/O 2025: AI Dominates with Gemini Upgrades, XR Glasses, and a “Total Overhaul” of Search

Google I/O 2025 was a whirlwind of announcements, showcasing the company's relentless focus on AI. Both models will now support audio-visual input and native audio-out dialogue through a Live API preview. These advancements aim to equip developers with the tools to create truly conversational AI experiences.

One of the most significant announcements was the "total overhaul" of Google Search. CEO Sundar Pichai showcased AI Mode, a more conversational search experience designed to provide users with robust, cited reports in minutes. This includes Deep Search, which expands background queries to hundreds for more comprehensive results. Google is also integrating Project Astra's multimodal capabilities, allowing users to use their camera for visual searches.

Google is packaging its latest AI features into two subscription tiers: Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra. The Ultra plan, priced at $249.99 per month, offers the highest usage limits, early access to experimental AI products like Project Mariner, Veo 3, and Gemini 2.5 Pro with Deep Think mode, and early access to Agent Mode. Google AI Ultra is available today in the U.S.

Google Beam, formerly Project Starline, aims to revolutionize video conferencing with realistic 3D experiences. Partnering with HP, Google is developing communication devices running Google Beam, seeking to foster deeper understanding and trust through natural body movements and eye contact. Meanwhile, Android XR glasses are poised to integrate seamlessly with Gemini, assisting users with navigation, real-time translation, and voice-activated photo capture. Partnerships with eyewear brands like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker aim to offer stylish and functional smart glasses.

Workspace is also getting an AI boost, with personalized smart replies in Gmail, near-real-time speech translation in Meet, and source-grounded writing help in Docs. These features are designed to streamline workflows and enhance productivity.

However, the sheer volume of announcements raises questions of focus and potential overlap. The line between Search Live and Gemini Live remains blurry, and the strategy of launching so many initiatives at once could signal a lack of clear direction. As one Business Insider reporter noted, Sergey Brin's increased presence and "founder mode" engagement highlight Google's commitment to AI but also underscore the competitive pressure from rivals like OpenAI.
