AI Revolutionizing Game Development: 80-90% of Code Now AI-Generated, Claims Level-5 CEO

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming various industries, and the video game sector is no exception. Akihiro Hino, CEO of Level-5, the studio behind popular titles like Ni no Kuni and Professor Layton, recently made a bold statement suggesting that AI is now responsible for 80-90% of video game coding. This revelation underscores the monumental shift happening in game development, demanding new skill sets for aspiring creators.

In an interview with Famitsu, Hino emphasized the growing importance of "aesthetic sense" for developers in an AI-driven landscape. He believes that while AI can handle the bulk of coding and even contribute to art, music, and game design, the human touch is crucial for refining and perfecting the final product.

"Currently, around 80~90% of codes are written by AI and then fixed up and finalized by human programmers," Hino stated. "In other words, it means that right now, around 80~90% of games are made by AI." The CEO further noted that AI's influence extends beyond programming, impacting art, music, and game design, making it essential for developers to master AI tools and refine their work with their own artistic sensibilities.

Hino isn't alone in recognizing AI's potential. Swen Vincke, founder of Larian Studios (the studio acclaimed for their hit title Baldur's Gate 3), acknowledges the value of AI in automating tasks and enhancing the creative process.

Vincke clarifies that Larian uses AI for tasks like motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and "whiteboxing" (prototyping). However, he remains skeptical of studios that aim to replace human developers entirely with AI, believing that the "human difference" is key to creating exceptional and engaging games.igure>Swen Vincke

"I don't think you would have a competitive advantage if you do [that], because it's gonna be what's available to everybody," Vincke stated, suggesting that studios solely relying on AI will miss the mark.. "But you're still gonna wanna create something special on top of that, and I think that's where teams like us will make the difference."

The debate surrounding AI in game development boils down to a question of balance. While AI offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency and automation, the artistry, creativity, and "aesthetic sense" that human developers bring to the table remains irreplaceable. The future of game development will likely involve a symbiotic relationship between humans and AI, where AI empowers developers to create more immersive and engaging experiences than ever before.
