AllTrails Unveils AI-Powered ‘Peak’ Membership: Revolutionizing Outdoor Exploration or Just Another Subscription?
AllTrails, the popular hiking and biking app, is launching a new premium membership tier called "Peak," offering users a suite of AI-powered features. But is this a genuine leap forward for outdoor enthusiasts, or simply another subscription vying for your hard-earned cash?
The 'Peak' membership, priced at $80 per year, boasts features like smart route creation that uses AI to customize trails based on user preferences for distance, steepness, and scenery. It also includes real-time trail condition forecasts, including temperature, precipitation, snow depth, air quality, and even mosquito activity. A 'Community Heatmap' leverages user data to predict trail traffic, allowing hikers and bikers to avoid crowds or find populated routes for safety. Furthermore, the 'Outdoor Lens' feature, coming later this summer, will enable users to identify plants, trees, and flowers using their phone's camera, logging discoveries within the app.

This move comes as Apple encroaches on AllTrails' territory by adding topographic maps and offline route capabilities to Apple Maps. AllTrails' response is a focus on features for its most engaged users.
While existing 'Plus' subscribers will gain the ability to download customized offline areas with detailed maps, the most significant updates are reserved for 'Peak' members. This subscription model raises questions about accessibility: are these enhancements essential, or are they premium features that should be available to all users?
Matt from TechRadar notes that the price hike for 'Peak' is significant, but the monthly cost is comparable to other fitness app subscriptions like Garmin Connect+ and Strava Premium. He expresses excitement about the 'Trail Conditions' and 'Outdoor Lens' features.

AllTrails, which was named iPhone App of the Year in 2023, claims to have over 80 million registered users across its free 'Base', 'Plus', and now 'Peak' tiers.
The new features like "Points of Interest" across all tiers, build on the existing popularity of the app. Some parks have reduced search-and-rescue actions as a result of AllTrails navigation. The custom feature looks like it will improve planning for runners or hiking groups, but may be best built using the desktop version first.
Sarah Perez, a reporter for TechCrunch since 2011, notes that the new option will initially roll out in the next few weeks to select members and will be available globally to all users by June. Users can sign up for early access on its website.
Ultimately, the value of the 'Peak' membership will depend on individual usage and the importance of these AI-powered features to regular outdoor adventurers. Is the promise of smarter routes, more accurate forecasts, and AI-driven identification worth the extra cost?
