Android 16’s Innovative Split-Screen Mode: A Multitasking Revolution?
Get ready for a potential game-changer in Android multitasking! Google is reportedly developing a new split-screen mode for Android 16, aiming to dramatically improve how we use multiple apps on our phones. This feature focuses on small screen devices, promising a more intuitive and user-friendly experience. But how exactly will it work?
The current split-screen options on Android feel limited. Most often offering a 50:50 split, or sometimes a 70:30 ratio. This isn't ideal, and Google is now experimenting with a 90:10 split-screen configuration. This means one app will occupy a dominant 90% of the screen, while another sits in a smaller 10% section. This allows for a primary app to be used comfortably while still having easy access to a secondary application.

Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority first reported on this upcoming feature. It emphasizes that the new split-screen mode isn’t just about screen ratios; it's about quick switching. Inspired by OnePlus's Open Canvas feature, tapping on the app in the smaller 10% section will instantly swap the sizes of both apps. This offers seamless switching between apps, making multitasking much faster and more efficient.
"The new split-screen mode configuration allows most apps to be used comfortably when occupying the larger 90% portion, it doesn’t leave enough space for the secondary app to display much useful information. Fortunately, Google has a simple solution. When you tap on the app in the smaller 10% portion, Android quickly swaps the sizes of both apps," reports Rahman.
Imagine browsing Google Chrome in the primary 90% of the screen, while having Google Keep open in the smaller 10% panel. Then, with a single tap you can transition Chrome to the 10%, and Keep expands to take up the 90%. This could be a game-changer for productivity.

The 90:10 split-screen mode is not yet publicly available, so there is no official release date as of yet, but expectations are high that it will debut with Android 16 in a future quarterly release. The development appears to be nearing completion, according to Android Authority, so hopefully users will see the feature soon.
