Apple Smart Glasses Set for 2026 Launch: A Meta Rival with AI Integration

Apple is reportedly gearing up to enter the smart glasses market, aiming for a late 2026 launch to directly compete with Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. This move signals Apple's ambition to integrate further into the realm of wearable technology and capitalize on the growing interest in AI-enhanced gadgets. The question is, can Apple replicate its past success in other tech categories in this nascent market?

According to a recent report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, known for his reliable Apple insights, the company is intensifying its efforts to meet the 2026 target. Plans are in place to begin mass production of prototypes through overseas suppliers by the end of this year. This aggressive timeline suggests Apple is serious about challenging Meta's lead in the space.

The project is being spearheaded by Apple's Vision Products Group, the team behind the Apple Vision Pro. This suggests that Apple is bringing its expertise in mixed-reality technology to bear on the smart glasses project. While the glasses will likely share similarities with Meta's offerings in terms of basic functionalities, Apple aims to differentiate with superior build quality and design. The company is even developing a custom silicon chip exclusively for these smart glasses, highlighting their commitment to internal innovation.

Key features of the upcoming Apple smart glasses are expected to include cameras, microphones, and speakers, enabling users to interact with Siri through voice commands. Functionalities are slated to encompass making calls, playing music, providing translations, and offering navigation assistance, echoing the capabilities of Meta's glasses, but potentially with improved AI integration.

Meta has been a pioneer in the smart glasses market, launching its first iteration in 2021 and reportedly selling around two million Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. The company is also planning to release new models that comes with Oakley-branded glasses with smart features and AR glasses expected by 2027. Google is also in the race, actively developing its own smart glasses based on the Android XR platform and partnering with eyewear brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster.

The key differentiator for success in the smart glasses market revolves around artificial intelligence (AI). Both Meta and Google are actively marketing their products as “AI glasses,” highlighting the software-driven capabilities that enhance user experiences.

Whether Apple's smart glasses can truly stand out in a competitive market will depend on how seamlessly they integrate into users' lives and the value they provide. Can Apple do it again?
