Apple’s Smart Home Ambitions: New HomePod and Robotic iPad Face Delays But Show AI Focus
Apple's foray into the smart home market is taking shape with rumors swirling around a new HomePod and a more ambitious robotic iPad. However, both projects appear to be facing delays as Apple navigates the complexities of AI integration and feature development. Is Apple's smart home vision hitting a snag, or is this just a strategic recalibration?
According to reports, Apple is working on a revamped HomePod featuring a 7-inch square display. This device is envisioned as a central hub for Siri and HomeKit, offering a command center for all smart home functions. The device may launch “by the end of this year”, according to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The initial plan was to launch this spring, But the launch has been pushed back due to complications with Apple's AI development, particularly with Siri and App Intents. Gurman also stated that the new Siri features with Apple Intelligence will roll out “in the coming year.” While internal testing is underway, the launch timeline remains uncertain.
Looking further ahead, Apple is also developing a more advanced smart home display with a robotic arm and what's described as a "unique AI personality." This project, according to Gurman, is a "major priority at Apple." However, to meet production timelines, some of the "bolder features" have been temporarily shelved and may reappear in future versions.
This robotic iPad seeks to compete with devices like Amazon's Echo lineup and Google's Nest Hub. Rumors suggest the starting price for the robotic arm version could be around $1,000, placing it in the premium segment. Meanwhile, Samsung is also developing its own smart home robot, Ballie, potentially intensifying the competition. This could suggest Apple may be partnering with Google Gemini for AI implementation in future products.

The challenges Apple faces in bringing these smart home devices to market highlight the complexities of integrating AI and advanced technologies. The delays suggest a commitment to delivering polished and functional products, even if it means sacrificing some initial features. It remains to be seen how Apple will navigate the competitive landscape and deliver on its smart home ambitions. While the iPad robot may be getting some features cut, the company is reportedly still aiming for a launch in the next year or two.
