Audio-Technica Unveils Stunning Transparent AT-LPA2 Turntable: A Visual and Sonic Masterpiece

Audio-Technica is making a bold statement in the world of high-end audio with its latest creation: the AT-LPA2 turntable. Following up on the buzz generated by its Hotaru turntable, the new AT-LPA2 boasts a completely transparent design, offering audiophiles a visually striking and sonically impressive listening experience. Is this the future of turntable aesthetics?

The AT-LPA2 draws inspiration from the limited-edition AT-LP2022, released to celebrate Audio-Technica's 60th anniversary. However, the new model isn't just a cosmetic upgrade; it features a redesigned tonearm, an upgraded cartridge, and a price tag of $2,000 – a significant jump from the AT-LP2022's $1,200 price point. While transparency has been a feature of some turntables before, the implementation of the AT-LPA2 is particularly striking.

The turntable's base is crafted from a 30mm thick slab of high-density transparent acrylic, while the platter is made from a 20mm thick piece of the same material. Acrylic is used not only for its striking transparent aesthetic, but also for its ability to dampen vibrations, improving playback performance and reducing noise.

While many high-end turntables utilize direct drive systems for superior performance, the AT-LPA2 employs a belt-drive system. Interestingly, Audio-Technica uses this design as a design choice. To ensure accurate playback speed, an optical sensor constantly monitors the platter's rotation, maintaining a consistent 33 1/3 or 45rpm. The separate power supply, a unique design choice, isolating the signal path from unwanted interference.

The AT-LPA2 features a newly designed straight carbon fiber tonearm, promising superior tracking and stability. It includes adjustable VTA and azimuth, an anti-skate mechanism, and two different counterweights for cartridge compatibility.

To maintain the turntable's clean aesthetic, the playback controls and power supply are housed in a separate unit. According to Audio-Technica, this separation isolates the audio components from power supply noise, resulting in a cleaner, more accurate sound. This also allows owners to keep the less visually appealing components out of sight.

Audio-Technica is also launching the next generation of its popular VM series of moving magnet cartridges, known as the AT-VMx series. This new lineup includes the 500x, 600x, and 700x models, offering a range of styli and design variations to cater to both vinyl newbies and seasoned audiophiles. Prices for the AT-VMx series start at £99 / €119.

The AT-LPA2 comes pre-installed with the AT-OC9XEN moving-coil cartridge, which features an elliptical stylus and high-grade PCOCC coils for improved channel separation and reduced distortion.

With its stunning transparent design, upgraded components, and a focus on sonic purity, the Audio-Technica AT-LPA2 is positioned as a premium turntable for discerning vinyl enthusiasts. Will its unique aesthetics and audiophile-grade performance justify its $2,000 price tag?
