Baldur’s Gate 3 Miniatures: A Critical Fail? Fans Mock “Melty” Character Designs
Baldur's Gate 3, the acclaimed RPG that has captivated gamers, is now facing an unexpected critique – not for its gameplay, but for its officially licensed miniatures. WizKids' new line of pre-painted Baldur's Gate 3 miniatures, intended to bring the game's beloved companions to the tabletop, has been met with widespread mockery due to their perceived poor quality.
The controversy ignited when a Larian Studios employee, Elodie Ceselli, a senior cinematic artist who worked on Baldur's Gate 3, shared images of the miniatures they received. Ceselli lamented the subpar paint applications, stating, "Only Gale has a decent face. It's expensive for a 5 years old painting work... Shame on you @Wizards_DnD." This sentiment quickly resonated with other fans and members of the press who received similar miniatures.

Numerous images circulating online showcase the alarming condition of the miniatures. Characters like Shadowheart appear to have "melty" faces, while others suffer from bizarre deformities and sloppy paint jobs. One player even reported receiving a Shadowheart miniature without a head – a glitch perhaps even Shar would find disturbing. GamesRadar+ described the miniatures as "a gallery of horrors from top to bottom," further amplifying the online ridicule.
WizKids promoted the miniatures with images showcasing a much higher level of detail and quality than what was delivered to consumers. This discrepancy between the promotional material and the actual product has fueled the backlash. While pre-painted miniatures are often not perfect, the severity of the reported flaws has raised concerns about quality control and value for money.

For $50, customers receive a boxset containing seven miniatures. While this price point may seem reasonable compared to custom-painted miniatures, the widespread reports of poor quality have left many questioning whether the product is worth the investment. Some suggest that fans would be better off repainting the miniatures themselves or sticking to virtual tabletop experiences.
Despite the negative reception, Baldur's Gate 3 itself continues to thrive. Larian Studios remains committed to delivering enhancements and new content, demonstrating a dedication to quality that contrasts sharply with the criticism leveled at the WizKids miniatures.
