Battlefield Gears Up for Launch: GTA 6 Delay Opens New Window for EA’s FPS Giant
The battlefield is set, and Electronic Arts (EA) is preparing to deploy its next Battlefield installment. With the recent delay of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6), a major competitor, EA feels “very good” about the launch window for the new Battlefield game, slated for release before April 2026.
This news comes after EA's Q4 and fiscal year 2025 results were published, confirming the reveal of the new Battlefield this summer. EA CEO Andrew Wilson calls the game “a pivotal step in delivering on our next generation of blockbuster entertainment” and is recommitted to the previously announced FY26 release window. This strategic move gives the new Battlefield game a chance to establish itself before GTA 6 potentially dominates the gaming landscape.
"We don't want to be anywhere near that," an anonymous executive said earlier this year, clearly indicating the industry's awareness of GTA 6's potential impact. Wilson, during the Q&A of EA's recent quarterly investors call, acknowledged the shift, noting that the long lead-up to major launches means, "if you weren't already ready to launch in this window, it may be hard to get ready and take advantage of what might be otherwise a less competitive window than we may have anticipated earlier."
For Battlefield, the path is clearer than before. The game was already set to launch sometime in EA's 2026 fiscal year which ends in March 2026. According to Wilson, EA would not "launch into a window that we thought truncated the value that we've invested into the franchise or the value that we think our players will derive from it once they jump in and start playing.”
The next Battlefield game promises to deliver a new chapter in the franchise. EA is also working on a new Skate game, also expecting to launch before April 2026.
In February, EA launched Battlefield Labs, a community testing initiative, allowing fans to provide feedback on key elements like combat, destruction, vehicles, and map designs. Furthermore, the playtest will significantly expand in May and will invite more players to participate and introduce new content.
EA will reveal the next installment in the Battlefield franchise sometime this summer.
