Bethesda & PlayStation Team Up for DOOM: The Dark Ages Trailer – A Cosmic Collaboration?
A new DOOM: The Dark Ages trailer has dropped, and it's raising eyebrows in the gaming community. Bethesda, now under the Microsoft umbrella, appears to have partnered directly with PlayStation for the marketing of this highly anticipated title. The trailer, revealed just ahead of the game's release, heavily features the PlayStation 5 and its capabilities, leaving Xbox fans wondering about the focus of this campaign.
The trailer, highlighted by Id Software's Hugo Martin, directly addresses "PS5 players" and introduces the new 'Cosmic Realm' area within Doom: The Dark Ages. Martin even closes the trailer with a special message for Sony fans, stating the team "wants to give the Sony fans something special as we head into launch. We cannot wait to share this experience with you [...] it plays fantastic on the PlayStation 5, and of course, the PlayStation 5 Pro." This emphasis on the PlayStation experience is unusual for a game that technically falls under the Xbox first-party banner.
According to Martin, Doom: The Dark Ages is "the best Doom game we've ever made.". The game will transport players to the Lovecraftian Cosmic Realm, a dimension never before seen in the Doom universe. This realm promises cyclopean architecture, dark secrets, and insane enemies. The story revolves around an unholy union between Hell and the Cosmic Realm, presenting new adversaries for the Doom Slayer.

Among the new foes is the Cosmic Baron, a twin-bladed brute capable of psionic attacks. Players will also encounter a Kaca demon, described as a floating brain with tentacles, similar to a creature from Bloodborne. To combat these enemies, players will gain access to the Reaver Chainshot, a gun that launches a large metal ball attached to a chain. This weapon allows for both light attacks against single opponents and heavy attacks capable of hitting multiple enemies at once.
The game boasts 22 levels of action-packed single-player combat, tons of gameplay innovations, and a roller coaster ride of a story. Id Software promises cutting-edge graphics powered by the idTech 8 engine, with fully dynamic lighting through raytracing and buttery-smooth 60 fps performance on PlayStation 5.

This PlayStation-centric reveal raises questions about Microsoft's marketing strategy for its multiplatform titles. While the emphasis on a premium single-player experience and cross-platform availability makes sense, the strong PlayStation focus might leave Xbox fans feeling sidelined. Is this a new direction for Bethesda's marketing, or a one-off collaboration?
DOOM: The Dark Ages is scheduled for release on May 15.
