BMW Teases Skytop Shooting Brake: A Modern Clownshoe?
Get ready for another stunning reveal from BMW at the upcoming Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este! Following the buzz around last year's Skytop concept, BMW is hinting at a new one-off car – and it looks like a shooting brake with a striking resemblance to the iconic "Clownshoe" Z3/M coupe. Could this be BMW's modern take on a classic?
The news broke when BMW Group Head of Design Adrian van Hooydonk shared a teaser photo on Instagram, showcasing a low-slung shooting brake shape heavily inspired by the Skytop Concept. This reveal comes just before the prestigious event, fueling anticipation among car enthusiasts worldwide.

While details are scarce, BMW describes the secretive car as "dynamic, elegant, exotic." Teaser images reveal minimalistic LED taillights similar to the Skytop convertible, a steeply raked rear window, and dual oval exhaust outlets. Notably, the photo also shows the same door handle winglets found on the Skytop, further suggesting a close connection.

Interestingly, the teaser images suggest this is not an M product. The traditional BMW mirror, rather than the winged M mirror, hints that this shooting brake might prioritize elegance over raw power. However, it's speculated that it could still be powered by the M8 Competition’s potent 617-horsepower 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, just like the production-bound Skytop convertible.
The new model is expected to debut at the 2025 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. BMW describes the model as “a unique blend of design, elegance, and precise craftsmanship”. This is likely built on the G15 BMW 8-Series platform and may use the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine from the M8 Competition.
Some speculate the new concept will ride on the underpinnings of the G15 BMW 8-Series, likely nearing its end.
The original Skytop generated significant buzz, quickly selling out its limited run of 50 units despite its hefty price tag. This success likely encouraged BMW to explore further limited-production vehicles. Is this Skytop shooting brake a sign of more exclusive BMW models to come?
Could this be another limited-edition model, capitalizing on the Skytop's success? Only time will tell. The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, happening this coming weekend (May 23–25), promises to unveil all the secrets. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the event!
