BMW Unveils the M2 Racing: A Track-Ready Beast for the Aspiring Racer

BMW is expanding its motorsport offerings with the introduction of the BMW M2 Racing, an entry-level race car designed for private customer teams around the world. Officially unveiled at the DTM season opener in Oschersleben, Germany, the M2 Racing promises uncompromising performance, durability, and pure driving pleasure at a relatively accessible price point.

Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, stated, "With the introduction of the BMW M2 Racing, we are continuing a proud tradition. Like its predecessors, the new BMW M2 Racing will redefine the entry-level segment. The car is affordable while offering racing teams and drivers uncompromising performance, durability, and pure driving pleasure. At BMW M Motorsport, supporting customer racing with cars that are easy to maintain, cost-efficient, and thrilling to drive is a top priority."

One of the most surprising aspects of the M2 Racing is its engine. Unlike the production M2, which boasts a powerful inline-six, the racing version features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine derived from BMW's B48 family. While this might raise some eyebrows, it's worth noting that the original BMW M3, the legendary E30, was also powered by a four-cylinder engine.

The 2.0-liter engine delivers 313 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Combined with a weight of just 3,300 pounds, the M2 Racing offers an impressive power-to-weight ratio. Björn Lellmann, Head of Customer Racing at BMW M Motorsport, emphasizes the car's intuitive handling and affordability, making it particularly attractive for grassroots motorsport.

Klingmann describes the car as a "fantastic entry-level car that is very easy to operate, has extremely low operating costs, and yet is a fully-fledged race car with high performance." He adds that the car is designed for everyone, from novices to ambitious racers.

The BMW M2 Racing is packed with track-focused modifications, including BMW M Motorsport–designed brake cooling, a full aerodynamic package, a carbon-fiber roof panel, quick-release mechanisms, 18-inch forged wheels, a pit speed limiter, adjustable anti-roll bars, and KW shock absorbers. It offers impressive features such as racing-specific dashboard, and other track-focused stuff.Every car comes in Alpine White, ready for its new owner to personalize with their own liveries and sponsorship decals.

Starting in 2026, private BMW M Motorsport teams will compete with the BMW M2 Racing in various sprint series and endurance events, including the prestigious 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The base version is priced at €98,000 (net) in the EU, making it a compelling option for aspiring racers.
