Buffalo Unveils Limited Edition ‘Skeleton’ Hard Drive with a Window to Its Soul
In a nostalgic nod to its past, Buffalo is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a limited-edition external hard drive that lets you peek into its inner workings. The Buffalo Skeleton Hard Disk, a modern homage to a classic design, is turning heads with its transparent window, offering a rare glimpse into the spinning platters and moving read/write heads. But be warned, this visual treat comes at a premium and in extremely limited quantities.
The HD-SKL, as it's known, isn't just about aesthetics. It features a 4TB drive encased in a machined aluminum housing with a sleek gold and anodized black finish, reminiscent of a retro Melco record player from 1978. Weighing in at about 3.3 pounds, it's designed as a display piece, complete with a power connector and a USB 3.2 Micro-B port.
While squeezing it into your gaming PC might require some serious modifications, Buffalo provides a unique software perk called SeekWizard (Windows only). This application offers various modes to animate the HDD arm, simulating data access or even functioning as a metronome or timer. However, this playful feature may contribute to the rather short one-month warranty, according to Buffalo.
"Initially, the development team believed it would be impossible to create today's ultra-high precision hard disks using a skeleton, but after much trial and error, they finally succeeded,", said Buffalo, highlighting the challenge in creating this unique product.
This isn't Buffalo's first foray into see-through storage. Back in 1998, they released a 4.3GB Skeleton Hard Disk with a fully transparent housing. Western Digital also dabbled in this realm with the Raptor X in 2006, featuring a small window to showcase its internals.
The Buffalo HD-SKL won't rival the speed of the best gaming SSDs, but it undeniably wins in the wow factor department. The drive will be shipping in June and sold via a lottery in Japan, with only 50 units available at a price of 100,000 yen (around $695) each.
While the price and availability might be a deterrent for many, the Buffalo Skeleton Hard Disk is a stunning reminder of the beauty of electromechanical technology. Will this limited-edition drive spark a resurgence in appreciation for the artistry hidden within our storage devices?
