Capcom Fighting Collection 2: A Deep Dive into Retro Fighting Game Glory

Capcom Fighting Collection 2 has arrived, offering a treasure trove of classic fighting games that delve beyond the well-trodden paths of Street Fighter II. This collection showcases Capcom's willingness to resurrect some of its more obscure, yet incredibly engaging, fighting titles.

While named Capcom Fighting Collection 2, it is actually the third installment, succeeding the 2022 release focusing on 2D games and the highly anticipated Marvel vs. Capcom collection. This latest installment assembles eight Capcom fighters from 1998 to 2004, spanning arcade and console platforms like the Dreamcast.

A significant portion of the collection is devoted to 2D crossover games like SNK vs. Capcom: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro and Mark of the Millennium 2001. Also included is Capcom Fighting Evolution, a unique title that brings together characters from Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, and Red Earth, creating bizarre matchups, like Ryu fighting a dinosaur. Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper, rounds the collection out with its excellent 2D gameplay.

These games highlight Capcom's effort to keep 2D fighters appealing during a period of genre decline, resulting in over-the-top mechanics and character designs.

The collection also features a quartet of 3D fighters, experimental titles exploring the genre in a new dimension. The Power Stone series stands out with its interactive stages, where players collect items while battling. Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein introduces weapon-based combat, while Project Justice offers a surprisingly deep storyline involving rival schools and team-based combat.

While these 3D fighters might not have the timeless appeal of their 2D counterparts due to slightly clunky controls, they remain historically significant and finally accessible to a broader audience. The most recent port of Power Stone was on the PlayStation Portable in 2006, making this collection a long-overdue re-release.

Beyond the games themselves, Capcom Fighting Collection 2 includes common add-ons such as online support, a music player, and a gallery of artwork. The collection may not be as comprehensive as offerings from Digital Eclipse, but it delivers what matters: eight classic games that are enjoyable to play and represent a significant evolution in the fighting game genre.

Adding to the celebration, legendary artist Shinkiro created a new piece of artwork encompassing characters from all eight titles, including Chun-Li, Cammy, Mai Shiranui, Nakoruru, Rouge, Claire, Akira, and Hinata.

Despite variations in the selection, the collection benefits from incredible emulation and rollback netcode, making online matches feel smooth. However, some graphical hiccups have been identified in single-player mode while playing against Guy in Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper. The collection is available on Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

With titles like Capcom vs. SNK 2, Project Justice, Power Stone 2, Plasma Sword, and Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper taking center stage, this collection is another solid compendium of some of Capcom’s best fighting games. Are there more collections like this to come from Capcom?
