Cyberpunk 2: Pre-Production Begins – What We Know So Far

The future of Night City is taking shape! CD Projekt Red (CDPR), the studio behind the highly popular Cyberpunk 2077, has officially announced that the sequel, currently known as Cyberpunk 2 (codename: Project Orion), has moved into the pre-production phase. This marks a significant step forward for a game that has been eagerly anticipated by fans worldwide.

According to an earnings report released on Wednesday, the development team has grown to 96 developers as of April 30th. While specific details remain scarce, CDPR describes Cyberpunk 2 as "the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe." Though “Cyberpunk 2” isn’t the official title, so stated CDPR senior PR manager Ola Sondej, but rather another game in the Cyberpunk universe.

The original Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky launch, but CDPR has since worked tirelessly to improve the game and address player concerns. The release of the critically acclaimed expansion, Phantom Liberty, has further fueled excitement for the future of the franchise. Speaking of which, Phantom Liberty has sold over 10 million copies. In addition, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5th.

While there's no official release date for Cyberpunk 2 just yet, Joint Chief Executive Officer Michał Nowakowski has assured investors that the game will be delivered "in due time." This suggests that CDPR is committed to taking the time needed to ensure that the sequel meets the high expectations of players.

Fans of The Witcher can also rejoice. CDPR also recently celebrated The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's 10th anniversary, announcing that the game has sold more than 60 million copies. Thus reinforcing CDPR's position as a powerhouse in the gaming industry.

The move to pre-production signals that CDPR is gearing up to deliver a compelling and immersive experience in the Cyberpunk universe. While we await further details, the anticipation continues to build, and the promise of a bigger, bolder Night City is certainly enticing.
