Dazzling Fireballs Light Up the Skies: Meteor Sightings Across the Western US Spark Excitement

The skies above the Western United States were recently illuminated by spectacular fireballs, captivating onlookers and sparking a flurry of reports and videos. These celestial events occurred primarily on May 3rd and 4th, 2025, leaving residents across Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, and even Alberta, Canada, in awe.

One particularly vivid sighting was captured on a dashcam in eastern Idaho by Jared Tate and shared by the National Weather Service in Pocatello. The video shows a bright light streaking across the sky, quickly disappearing in a downward direction. Many commenters reported seeing similar meteors in locations such as Tetonia, near Birch Creek, Blackfoot, and Hailey suggesting a potentially widespread event.

Adding to the excitement, numerous reports described the fireball as having a distinct green hue. Jason Trump, a NASA solar system ambassador, explained that the green color could be attributed to the presence of nickel, a common metal in space objects. Witnesses described the event as unlike anything they had ever seen.

"I've never seen anything quite like this," one person from Jackson, Wyoming, wrote. "It was like a firework falling down from the sky!" Another witness from Garland, Utah, initially thought it might be a plane crashing due to its speed and brightness.

Experts speculate that these fireballs may be related to the ongoing Eta Aquarids meteor shower, which is active from April 20th to May 21st, with its peak occurring around May 5th-6th. Aquarid meteors are known for their high speed and visibility in both hemispheres.

The American Meteor Society received dozens of reports about the event, and are analyzing the data to determine the meteor's trajectory and potential landing location. Trump noted that it's possible fragments of the meteor survived and landed, though their location is still unknown. In August 2022, a meteorite was recovered in Salt Lake City, which gives hope that some remains from this event might also be found.

The recent fireball sightings have ignited public interest in space and astronomy, prompting many to learn more about meteors and meteor showers. As Trump encourages, visit the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake for more information.
