Destiny 2 Goes Full Star Wars: New Expansion ‘Renegades’ Revealed Alongside ‘Edge of Fate’ Details
Destiny 2 is about to get a whole lot more galactic. Bungie recently unveiled a slew of exciting updates, including details on the upcoming The Edge of Fate expansion and a surprising reveal of a Star Wars-inspired expansion titled Renegades, slated for December 2025. This announcement has sent waves of excitement and, for some, apprehension through the Destiny community.
The Edge of Fate, arriving on July 15, will take players to Kepler, a Metroidvania-inspired planetoid at the edge of the solar system. Players will navigate this new destination using dark matter-fueled abilities, including Matter Spark, reminiscent of Samus Aran's morph ball from the Metroid series. This ability allows guardians to transform into a ball of energy, zipping through tight spaces and electrocuting enemies. Other new abilities include the Relocator Cannon for teleportation and Matter Morph, allowing players to reshape the environment. A new multi-year saga from the Destiny team dubbed the Fate Saga also begins here.
The Fate Saga will delve into the mysteries of The Nine, godlike extradimensional beings connected to the solar system's major bodies. Players will encounter returning characters like Ikora Rey and new faces like Lodi, exploring themes of manipulation and the alteration of fate. To prepare players for The Edge of Fate, Bungie is launching a new prologue chapter called Rite of the Nine, featuring three dungeons with varying difficulty levels.
Beyond the expansion content, Destiny 2 is undergoing significant core gameplay changes. The Director is being replaced with the Open Portal system, streamlining activity selection and customization with 50 new modifiers. These modifiers will dramatically alter gameplay; ex: a grapple ability for Spider-Man-like traversal. Gear is also being revamped with Armor 3.0, featuring set bonuses and customizable perks. Equipment will now come in five tiers of quality, with the hardest-to-obtain Tier 5 weapons receiving special shaders.
Other additions include a new Crucible mode called Heavy Metal, pitting tanks against mech-style brigs. The Griffin combat vehicle can be earned and equipped into your Sparrow slot. Also, THE Shooting Range is coming to the Tower, offering a space to test builds against various enemy types.
However, the biggest surprise was the reveal of Renegades, the 2025 expansion inspired by Star Wars. The brief teaser hinted at lightsabers, blasters, and environments reminiscent of Tatooine. Guardians will also be able to acquire Dark Side-themed skins, including General Grievous, Darth Vader, and Kylo Ren. While some longtime fans may have reservations about such a direct crossover, Renegades is set to be a major moment in Destiny 2's evolving narrative.
With a new expansion, gameplay overhauls, and a dive into the Star Wars universe, Destiny 2 is poised for a thrilling future. What do you think about Destiny 2 embracing the Star Wars universe? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
