Diddy Kong Gets a Makeover: Nintendo Updates Design After Decades, Original Creator Approves!

After years of sporting his classic look, Diddy Kong is getting a significant design update, mirroring changes made to Donkey Kong. The shift, first hinted at with the upcoming Switch 2 titles, has been officially confirmed by Nintendo and is already generating buzz within the gaming community. Finally, both Diddy and Donkey Kong will feature appearances more reminiscent of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a change welcomed by fans and even the character's original creator.

For nearly three decades, Donkey Kong has maintained a consistent look, dating back to Donkey Kong Country in 1994. However, the recent Mario Kart World teaser hinted at a major change for Donkey Kong, bringing his appearance closer to his movie counterpart. Now, it's Diddy Kong's turn for a visual refresh.

The new Diddy Kong redesign, revealed on Nintendo's News app, showcases several notable differences. While his overall size, potbelly, trademark t-shirt, and hat remain, details such as visible teeth and a fluffier fur texture add a modern touch. Notably, the Nintendo logo on his hat has been removed, perhaps hinting at a detachment from self-awareness within the Nintendo universe.

GameXplain highlighted ten specific changes in a recent video, emphasizing the shift toward a more expressive and updated design. The update aligns Diddy more closely with his cameo in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Kevin Bayliss, the former Rare designer responsible for the original Donkey Kong redesign and the creation of Diddy Kong, has expressed his approval. In a tweet, Bayliss stated, "Thank you Nintendo for improving your Diddy Kong character, and being sympathetic towards my original design. They both now look better than ever. I can now rest in peace." He jokingly added, "All he needs now is a racetrack, and a massive Pig in a purple cape to challenge him to a race!", referencing the beloved N64 classic, Diddy Kong Racing.

The redesigned Diddy Kong is expected to feature in upcoming games, including the highly anticipated Donkey Kong Bananza for the Switch 2. While his presence in the game is yet to be officially confirmed, his updated look signals a renewed focus on the character. Some fans speculate it might mean that if Super Smash Bros. makes it to the Switch 2, this is theoretically how Diddy will appear. In an interesting twist, Nintendo Korea may have accidentally revealed a spoiler related to other characters appearing in Donkey Kong Bananza.

With teeth and a fresh look, Diddy Kong's makeover is more than just a cosmetic change; it's a sign of Nintendo embracing new designs while respecting the legacy of its beloved characters. What do you think of the new Diddy Kong design? Let us know in the comments below!
