EA Sports FC Mobile is changing the game, literally! In an unprecedented move, EA Sports is partnering with Major League Soccer (MLS) and Apple TV to bring live soccer matches directly to its mobile gaming platform. This groundbreaking initiative is set to kick off on May 10th, allowing players worldwide to experience the thrill of live MLS action within the EA Sports FC Mobile app.
The deal marks a significant step for EA as it ventures into live sports streaming, a domain typically dominated by traditional media outlets. The first match to be streamed is a highly anticipated rematch of the 2024 MLS Cup final between the Los Angeles Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls. Players can tune in on Saturday, May 10th, at 4:30 PM PT / 7:30 PM ET to catch the action live. The second match features Atlanta United FC battling the Philadelphia Union on May 17. Two additional games in September will complete the streaming lineup, with matchups to be announced later.
But the benefits don't stop at just watching the game. According to Lawrence Koh, VP of EA SPORTS FC Mobile, this is a "commitment to our players to bring them closer to the game they love." EA Sports FC Mobile players who tune in to watch will receive in-game currency. As an added bonus, viewers will also get a free one-month trial of MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, offering access to even more soccer content.
This collaboration also underscores MLS's strategy to expand its reach to digital-native audiences. Camilo Durana, Executive VP at Major League Soccer, stated that this partnership displays the league's "commitment to pushing boundaries, innovation and fan-first experiences." Bringing games to EA SPORTS FC Mobile aims to engage new viewers and cultivate relationships with fans in innovative ways.
The move comes after reported underperformance of EA Sports FC contributed to recent layoffs at EA. By leveraging its existing mobile platform and partnering with MLS and Apple TV, EA hopes to revitalize its soccer franchise and generate new revenue streams.
MLS's media rights deal with Apple, initiated in 2023, has focused on experimenting with various partners with the goal of directing fans back to MLS Season Pass. While subscriber numbers for MLS Season Pass haven't been publicly disclosed, Commissioner Don Garber has indicated that they are exceeding expectations.
