Elden Ring Nightreign: Why No Two-Player Co-op? Developer Admits Oversight, Considers Future Update
Elden Ring Nightreign is launching soon, but fans have noticed a peculiar omission: dedicated two-player co-op. While the game supports solo play and three-player squads, a duo mode is conspicuously absent. Why this unexpected choice?
According to game director Junya Ishizaki, the lack of two-player co-op was simply an oversight. As he explained to IGN, FromSoftware focused their efforts on balancing the game for solo and three-player experiences, inadvertently neglecting the duo option. "In putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect," Ishizaki admitted.
This doesn't mean duos are entirely out of luck. The game will still match players with a single friend and a random solo adventurer to form a trio. However, Ishizaki acknowledged that a dedicated duo mode is "something we are looking at and considering" for a post-launch update, though nothing is confirmed at this point.
The director elaborated that the decision was largely driven by balancing concerns. FromSoftware wanted to maintain the challenging-yet-rewarding experience that defines their Souls-like games. In Elden Ring Nightreign, the difficulty dynamically adjusts to each type of gameplay, but Ishizaki stated a duo mode was not a priority during development. In solo mode, "The activeness and aggressiveness of enemies towards any one single player has been adjusted so that you don't find yourself in any unreasonable multi-foe fights", but in group mode, players are incentivized to work together.
Ishizaki also pointed to a "self-revive feature" as a way Nightreign numbs the sting of solo play, "a limited life raft, but anything is better than going down, dying alone, and losing a hard-earned level on respawn."
While the lack of two-player co-op is disappointing to some, fans can rest assured that FromSoftware is aware of the demand and potentially exploring options for the future. Elden Ring Nightreign launches on May 30th for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
