Elon Musk’s SpaceX Acquires Akoustis Assets: A Strategic Move in RF Filter Technology

In a recent development, SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, has significantly expanded its technological capabilities by acquiring substantially all of the assets of Akoustis Technologies through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Tune Holdings Corp. This strategic acquisition, finalized on May 15, 2025, marks SpaceX's entry into the realm of BAW high-band RF filters, critical components for mobile and wireless applications.

The acquisition, valued at approximately $30.2 million in cash and the assumption of certain liabilities, was conducted under Section 363 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, following Akoustis's chapter 11 filing. The deal was approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Mark Podgainy, Finance Transformation Officer of Akoustis, stated, “We are pleased to close this strategic transaction, which will maximize value for our creditors and preserve the vast majority of our employees’ jobs.” This highlights the dual benefit of the acquisition: financial recovery for Akoustis's creditors and job security for its employees.

Key Highlights of the Acquisition:

  • Complete Asset Acquisition: Tune Holdings now owns substantially all Akoustis's assets except those owned by Grinding and Dicing Services, Inc. (GDSI).
  • Continued Operations: Tune Holdings will maintain Akoustis’s existing operations and team infrastructure, ensuring seamless support for its global customer base.
  • BAW RF Filters: The acquisition allows Tune Holdings to produce and deliver next-generation BAW high-band RF filters. These filters are essential for mobile and other wireless applications, showcasing SpaceX's broadening interests and investments in critical technology components.

This isn't SpaceX's first venture into component manufacturing. The purchase of assets from Huntersville company also confirms SpaceX's broader strategy of vertical integration. By acquiring Akoustis, SpaceX secures access to specialized technology and expertise, potentially reducing its reliance on external suppliers and enhancing its control over the supply chain.

What This Means for the Tech Industry:

The acquisition signals a significant step for SpaceX beyond its core space exploration endeavors. The company's investment in RF filter technology could have implications for its Starlink satellite internet service, which requires robust wireless communication capabilities. Integrating Akoustis's technology could enhance the performance and efficiency of Starlink's network.

The move highlights a growing trend among tech giants to internalize critical technology development and manufacturing processes. As wireless communication becomes increasingly crucial, companies are seeking to consolidate control over key components to maintain a competitive edge.

This deal also represents a challenging chapter for Akoustis Technologies, culminating in a sale after facing financial difficulties. However, it presents new opportunities under the leadership of Tune Holdings, with the potential for further innovation in BAW RF filter technology.
