Final Fantasy & Magic: The Gathering Unite! Sephiroth’s New Look Sparks FF7 Remake Part 3 Theories
The worlds of Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering are colliding, and the results are stunning! The upcoming Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy collaboration, slated for release on June 13, 2025, is generating significant buzz, not only for its gorgeous artwork but also for the intriguing mechanics it introduces. But the beautiful card arts are not the only thing that are catching the attention, with Sephiroth at the center of many discussions.
One card, in particular, is fueling speculation surrounding Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. Tetsuya Nomura, creative director of the remake and artist on the original game, illustrated several Sephiroth cards for the set. In a statement, Nomura revealed that the Safer Sephiroth design differs from the original game, adding, "There is also a reason that the design for Safer Sephiroth is different from the original game, but I unfortunately can’t share more about that."
This cryptic comment from Nomura has set the internet ablaze with theories. Could this new design hint at plot points or character developments in the upcoming third and final installment of the Final Fantasy Remake trilogy?

Beyond the Sephiroth mystery, the Final Fantasy x MTG collaboration is showcasing incredible artwork from series veterans like Nomura and Yoshitaka Amano. Amano's work on Final Fantasy 6's Terra has also garnered praise. The detail and artistry have led some to jokingly blame Nomura's involvement for the lack of updates on Kingdom Hearts 4.
The collaboration features unique mechanics tailored to the Final Fantasy universe. For example, Job Select allows players to create a Hero creature token with equipment attached, while Tiered spells mimic the evolving magic system in Final Fantasy. Other mechanics include Summon, Jump, Darkness // Protect, Super Nova, and Trance, each reflecting iconic elements of the games. Stagger is the signature feature forLightining giving her the ability to damage an opponent or permanent, doubling all sources of damage from that turn to your next. Meld lets players combine Fang and Vanille into Ragnarok, and Cheer boosts creatures with counters on them.

With so many exciting elements, the Magic: The Gathering - Final Fantasy series promises a thrilling experience for fans of both franchises.
