GameStop Investigates Forced Bundling of Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders: Were Customers Pressured?
The launch of Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders was already fraught with technical difficulties and high demand. Now, GameStop is under fire amid reports that some stores allegedly pressured customers into buying expensive bundled accessories in order to secure their console. Is this unethical upselling, or simply a misunderstanding? Let's delve into the controversy.
Reports began circulating online after X user and Twitch streamer Elea Tsentzelis detailed their experience at a GameStop location in Astoria, New York. According to Tsentzelis, the store was "forcing" customers to purchase bundles that included accessories like cases and screen protectors alongside the console, claiming they couldn't process the console SKU alone.
This led to some customers walking away from the pre-order altogether. Tsentzelis posted a video showing a GameStop employee requesting the creation of a bundle that had a minimum amount quantity that included items such as MicroSD card, Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World bundle, and a Pro Controller.
While some users online shared similar experiences of aggressive upselling at other GameStop locations, including pressure to purchase GameStop Pro memberships, many reported no issues pre-ordering the console by itself. This suggests the practice may not have been widespread, limited to certain stores attempting to maximize profits during a high-demand launch.
GameStop has responded to the allegations, stating that they are "actively investigating" the matter. "Any customer who was turned away at the Astoria location should reach out via DM so we can make it right," the company's support account posted on X.

The situation raises questions about ethical sales practices and the potential for retailers to exploit high demand for new gaming consoles. While upselling is common in retail, forcing customers into unwanted purchases crosses a line.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to release on June 5th, but pre-order difficulties have already created frustration for many gamers. The forced bundling accusations add another layer to the chaotic launch, potentially damaging GameStop's reputation.
It remains to be seen how GameStop will rectify the situation, especially with limited console stock. However, the company's response indicates a commitment to addressing customer concerns and ensuring fair sales practices.
