Google I/O 2025 came and went, leaving many wondering: is Google's AI focus neglecting the average consumer? The event was heavily centered around artificial intelligence, but the announcements, particularly the new Google AI Ultra plan, felt out of reach for many regular users.

This year's I/O spotlighted Google's ambitious AI advancements, from the new Gemini 2.5 model to Flow with Veo 3. However, the unveiling of the Google AI Ultra plan, priced at a staggering $249 per month, sparked debate about who Google I/O is truly for.

Google AI Ultra: VIP Access to Google's AI?

The Google AI Ultra plan, bundled with Gemini 2.5, Flow with Veo 3, early access to Project Mariner, 30TB of Google One storage, and YouTube Premium, is clearly targeted towards developers and power users who can leverage these advanced tools. As Google explained, it's "almost like your VIP access to all of Google's AI." But is this price point alienating everyday users?

While the Project Astra video demo showcased genuinely useful applications, much of the keynote felt geared towards those with a developer mindset. Even features like AI Mode on Search felt somewhat intangible for the average consumer. This focus on developer-centric announcements isn't new. As Android Central senior editor Jerry Hildenbrand notes, developer conferences are crucial for building reasons to use a platform.

However, some consumer-facing announcements were relegated to a separate pre-recorded video, making it seem like an afterthought. This highlights Google's priority: AI and Search, which are key to their revenue streams. Everything else, including Android and Wear OS, seems secondary in this AI-driven landscape.

Google's 'World Model' Bet

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, articulated Google's grand design: a 'world model' – an AI that understands real-world dynamics and can simulate the world like the human brain. This vision, encompassing a universal AI assistant, aims to create AI that learns underlying principles and understands cause and effect. This is exemplified by Google DeepMind's work on models like Genie 2, generating interactive game environments from various prompts.

Sundar Pichai stated that the company now processes 480 trillion tokens a month, 50 times more than a year ago which showcases Google's dedication to its AI development.

However, Google's strategic ambition raises questions about control and openness. Will Google prioritize its search business by leveraging this AI primarily for itself? Or will it fully open its foundational AI for other developers and companies?

The AI Arms Race: Google vs. Microsoft vs. OpenAI

While Google is aggressively pushing AI, it faces stiff competition. Microsoft is strengthening its enterprise software landscape with its AI-powered Copilot. OpenAI's ChatGPT boasts a massive consumer reach, potentially threatening Google's search model. The AI landscape is evolving rapidly, requiring Google to innovate and integrate faster than its rivals.

Google's moves are not without challenges. An Apple executive's testimony about declining Safari searches due to AI offerings caused a significant drop in Alphabet's stock value. As consumers increasingly turn to AI chatbots, Google's dominance in search could be at risk.

The I/O takeaway: Google is positioning itself to lead the AI revolution, reshaping both search and the user experience. While the focus may seem developer-heavy right now, the long-term vision aims at ambient intelligence that personalizes our interaction with technology. The question remains: can Google execute fast enough and balance enterprise and consumer needs in this AI arms race?
