Google Messages Finally Lets You ‘Delete for Everyone’: A Game-Changer or Too Late?

Google Messages is finally catching up with its competitors! After much anticipation, the 'Delete for Everyone' feature is beginning to roll out, allowing users to retract sent messages in group RCS conversations. But is this long-awaited feature a game-changer, or has the competition already left Google in the dust?

As spotted earlier this year by 9To5Google, the new option presents two choices when deleting a message: 'Delete for everyone' and the existing 'Delete for me'. This gives users much-needed control over their conversations, preventing those embarrassing or regrettable texts from lingering in the digital ether. However, Google cautions that messages may still be visible on older app versions.

The 'Delete for Everyone' functionality is tied to Universal Profile 2.7, which brings broader capabilities like message editing and recalling. Interestingly, initial reports suggest the feature is currently only appearing in larger group conversations (around 12 participants), leaving smaller chats and one-on-one exchanges without this option. This limited rollout raises questions about Google's strategy and whether it's intended to gauge user feedback or iron out potential issues before a wider release.

Reddit user u/seeareeff shared screenshots showing the 'Delete for Everyone' option in a large group chat, confirming its existence in the beta release. This aligns with previous reports indicating a 15-minute window to unsend messages. However, some users are still waiting for the feature to appear on their devices, even with the latest beta version installed; indicating a phased roll-out.

WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage have long offered similar features, allowing users to unsend messages with varying limitations. Google's late entry into this arena begs the question: Will it be enough to satisfy users who have grown accustomed to this basic functionality on other platforms?

In addition to the 'Delete for Everyone' feature, Google Messages is also introducing an 'Unsubscribe' button to combat SMS and RCS spam, particularly from promotional content. This feature aims to declutter users' inboxes and streamline their messaging experience. Google is also working on other group chat features like joining via invite links and QR codes, as well as @-mentions.

While the 'Delete for Everyone' feature is a welcome addition, Google's implementation—with its staggered rollout and potential limitations—may leave some users wanting more. Will this feature truly enhance the Google Messages experience, or is it simply a case of too little, too late? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
